Liberals say they’re targets of prank campaign callsPublished 35 minutes agoEmailPrint(15) Share Rss ArticleComments (15)

WINNIPEG – At least seven Liberal MPs have complained of being targeted by a dirty tricks campaign where people in their ridings are called at all hours by rude telemarketers pretending to be party operatives.

Furious constituents have been calling candidates’ offices demanding to know why they are being harassed by local Liberal campaign offices. The Liberal Party is investigating.

“As a matter of fact, it started in my riding yesterday,” Ray Simard, the Liberal candidate in St. Boniface, told reporters at a news conference Tuesday held by Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff.

“They are calling our office saying people are being rude with them. They (the telemarketers) call them at weird times of the night … and we are checking into it,” he said, adding later “that obviously this is coming from another party” up to dirty tricks.

Joe Volpe, the Liberal candidate in Eglinton-Lawrence, has complained about similar calls being made there. One of Volpe’s campaign workers told the Star the office has received complaints from constituents saying they have been called late at night — sometimes as many as six times in a row — by people asking which candidate they planned to vote for. Constituents who said they would support Volpe have been hung up on.

In addition, the campaign worker said constituents have ordered lawn signs from the bogus callers, only to wait weeks before realizing something was wrong when the signs never showed up.

Eglinton-Lawrence is one of Toronto’s most hotly-contested ridings this time around. Volpe, who has been the MP for the area since 1988, is facing his main competition from Conservative candidate Joe Oliver.

Oliver’s campaign has released a statement saying they have nothing to do with the prank calls.

Another riding in the GTA is also making news for its tightly contested race that allegedly prompted one party organizer to take drastic steps.

A Liberal campaign worker in Brampton West was arrested and charged last week with possession of stolen property after police allegedly found several lawn signs belonging to the Conservative candidate in the back of his truck.

Brampton resident Rachpal Grewal, 47, will appear in court May 12.
Gee, guess it was a hard choice deciding what went in the headline and what went at the tail end.....

A story that covers multiple ridings, in two different provinces and thousands of voters, versus some guy stealing signs off laws in a single riding.

Definitely an easy choice as to what gets the headline.

Now, if you want to infer that the media is biased, you might want to find an article that gives coverage to only one party getting pranked and makes no mention of the shenanigans being played on the other party as well.

The media in Winnipeg must be like the PS in Winnipeg but they are trying to be less unbiased. Perhaps, it's no use for the media to report.
About the dirty tactics, everyone knows Winnipeg is strategic to that party who mentioned Winnipeg at the party leaders debate last week. It is going to be very tough to win the votes there when there is a happy PS, set up by the old party
