Nolinor Convair 440 taxis into a fence at BFI today Mar 20

Post by bizjets101 »

While taxiing at Boeing Field Nolinor Flight NRL920 taxied into a fence - parts of the propeller
may have also hit another unknown aircraft.

Pieces of metal littered the flight-line immediately around the airplane and its nose cone was knocked off by the force of the impact. The front of the plane was tangled in a white tent after the accident.

Also reported - a crowd had gathered for a ceremony for the arriving first Boeing 747-8 on the opposite end of the airfield at the time of the incident.

C-GNRL is registered as a Convair 440 - anyone know if it's actually a Convair 580???

The company's name is Nolinor.

Being a Quebec company, I've always assumed the name came from a mashup of the french verb 'noliser' (To rent/lease) and the french noun 'nord' (north).

Pretty sure it's a 580. There are lots of 580's listed as 440's I think I has to do with most of them being converted from 440's.

As far as I know, nobody in Canada is currently running 440's. You gotta go to Miami to find em in U.S. registry.

Convair never built any 580s. All 580's are actually re-engined 340 and 440 radial engined aircraft that Pacific Airmotive modified with Allison turbines.

I've got the name correct now, Nolinor !!!

http://www.nolinor.com/vw/fs/p002.htm
Convair never built any 580s. All 580's are actually re-engined 340 and 440 radial engined aircraft that Pacific Airmotive modified with Allison turbines.
Let me rephrase the question - does C-GNRL have Allison 501 D13D/H turboprop engines, and an enlarged vertical fin and modified horizontal stabilisers?

So the correct answer in looking at the photo - is the aircraft is currently a CV580F.

hmmm, I notice on the register - of the 32 Convair's 6 are listed as 340/580 or 440/580, I haven't check but I'd assume the majority are upgraded (just not on the register).

It could have Allison 501 D22H engines as well. :D

Hard to tell from the pic, since the rounded tips of the Hamilton Standard props (vs the square tips of the Aeroproducts props) are the only external giveaway.

I would say it's a 580 at 99,9%! I've seen those guys quite a few times, and best of my knowledge, all their convairs have the allison turbines on them... huge props on that thing... 1000hp/blade!!! 4000hp/side!!! Awesome planes, too bad they wrecked one....

If I remember correctly the props look like 4x8 sheets of plywood too must be lots of power to turn those

Here is the exact same aircraft, Convair 440 N3432 construction number 375, the way it was originally built by Convair with the radial piston eninges still in place.

Seem that few people know this, but Canadair DESIGNED the Convair 580.

I was told by their Chief Engineer that it is a complete redesign of the Convair 440
but Canada at the time was still a colony and if Convair owned Canadair,
everything Canadair USED was actually Crown property, buildings, machine tools
even Cartierville Airport.

The CROWN resided in England, favored British interests, Napier Eland was British
and was going to be hung on the Canadair, regardless of whoever's opinion.

The Napier Eland's specs where enough to make your head spin, IT WAS BETTER
THAN THE PW 100 who came 40 years later!!!

However, you'll notice than Pratt is testing their engines at length before putting
them on an airplane...Napier did not spend ONE plugged nickel!!! they just shipped
them to Canadair who just delivered them with the airplane, the Canadair 66(following government's orders!).
Of course, it had stellar performances, but hardly ever finished a flight on two engines.
One time, with a load of Airline owners and executives, it had FOUR engines failures,
dragging itself to a runway alternating from one engine to the other.
Naturally, Quebecair and the Air Forces took all their planes back to Cartierville
and sued the crap out of Canadair.
Image
Napier lost their reputation forever and it took Canadair a long time to
drag itself out of that hole.

General Dynamic-Convair took the airframe back home, put the proven
Allison of it, and voilà, the Convair 580, a resounding commercial success.

Canadair CC-109 Cosmopolitan

Canadair's parent company in the late 1950's was General Dynamics who also owned Convair Aircraft in the United States. When Convair phased out the Convair CV-440 twin engine transport design, Canadair purchased the production jigs along with some uncompleted airframes. Canadair further refined the original design with 3,500 shp Napier Eland turboprop engines. These new variant was initially known as the Convair 540 since they were initially based on the uncompleted CV-540 airframes. New build aircraft were subsequently given the CL-66 Canadair designation.

The RCAF became the launch customer for this new version by ordering ten CL-66B variants which incorporated a reinforced floor, wide load doors and the ability for both cargo and passengers. The aircraft were introduced in Air Transport Command and were primarily used for the bulk of the type's career for VIP transport duties. The aircraft were also deployed to Europe for Canadian NATO contingent support as well as to the US in support of Canadian NORAD operations.

In 1966, eight of the RCAF Cosmopolitans were re-engined with Allison T-56 turboprops. After an avionics upgrade to "glass cockpit" status, the aircraft were retired in 1995.

I don't really follow the old prop-liners - but I'm guessing you mean Canadair designed the Convair 540 not the 580?? Just a conversion of the Convair 340 with Napiers - who was bought out by Rolls Royce in 1961 which is why they disappeared. Sounds like there was less then 20 Napier powered Convairs???

Rolls Royce Convairs were the 600 and 640's, and the Allison's the 580's.

Quebecairs two Convairs I assume were 340's converted to 540's, then 580's.
C-GFHC which was scrapped in Kelowna and C-GFHD which is current C-FKFA with Conair.

The 10 Canadian built Convairs - CC-109's - 2 were scrapped, the other 8 were converted to CV580's - one was lost in a hangar fire in Montreal - and all were eventually replaced with Dash 8's and Challengers!!! All are stored or scrapped.

These Napiers where a total disaster, none survived, all where dumped to be replaced by Allisons.
Three Napier sets where hung by Canadair on old 440, but the Canadairs
then the 580 where a different airplane, the aeronautical engineers told me,
the fuselage shape is different, nose, doors, floor, pressurization, brakes anti-skid...etc...
an interesting story there:
http://www.ruudleeuw.com/canada07-saskatoon.htm

It get better...while on class on falcon 20, four guys quit to go fly a convair 58o in Lauderdale for better pay.
A month later, we hear they ditched it in the drink for a double engine failure...(you can guess why!)
Yup, one of the ex Quebecair-Canadair ones:

Magnasticked fuel 2,000# Fuel required to go FLL to Opa Locka 2,000#...
The co-pilot advised the pilot to fly to the ocean
Yes, way better than the I-95

Last I heard of the Napiers was in the Arctic where they where hung,
or rather lowered into the hovercrafts used for the Mackenzie delta surveys and then the Prudhoe bay oil fields,
where they kept their reputation up, lasting an average of twenty hours.
