Wages for Ramp Workers

Post by AZN 027 »

What do most companies pay their ramp workers? what kind of benefits do they get?

I heard Wasaya starts em out at $9.50/hr

Also, how much do entry-level pilots make? I'm talkin about the guys who have just transitioned from the ramp to the right seat.

Thanks a million

Yep, you're on track. 10 beans per hour is the going rate for cheap, uneducated, dime-a-dozen labour. Benefits? I don't think so.

Don't tell anyone in Canadian aviation, but the Mexicans will do it for 3.50 an hour!!

EDIT...
I forgot the benefits!! The benefits are you can get screamed at and put down by 8-10 people who haven't got a clue of what the fluck is going on in aviation. I don't care if there is a G-V sitting on the ramp, where do we draw the line as far as human decency goes? When do we walk away?

For answers to this, keep watching the sky for DESKSGO, the failure pilot's alternative airline.

Back in '92 I was making the same 10 bones an hour........tough to live on. A twenty out of the ATM for beers on a friday night was big. Don't miss the calls from the creditors asking for student loan money........told them about my situation and faxed a paycheck; problem solved. Never forget paying $175/month and just covering the interest with minimal principal. It all worked out though.........

Thanks for the Desksgo slam, I enjoyed that.

Oh sure AZN! All the free flights you could handle. To sunny destinations like Shamattawa, York Landing, and my fav resort destination Oxford House! $10 an hour was the going rate. Oh and free coffee, don't forget the free coffee! cj

I'm a rampie in sask. and only make 7.25$/hr

It's a little cheaper to live here in sask., but I think that you guys a makin' the "real big bucks" there, where ever you are?

We do have a benefits pakage, but it doesn't kick in until you've been there for 3 months. Also we can fly anywhere with the company "Non-rev"

I think that we get big deals with West Jet and Northwest. We had a big deal with Air Canada but don't get that one any more.

The question I ask my self is why did I take this job on the ramp? Pay Cut.

For me I want to be a Pilot and this is an means to an end.
And while I am doing this job (rampie), I am going to do the best job that I can while I am there. Hopefuly, this will be noticed and I will be considered for a flying position soon than later.

Either way the plan is to not stay in those positions forever so how much you make an hour is almost irrelevant. Made $8/hr at SGK but worked about 70hr/s a week in the summer so you made all right cash. One bonus in MB is that beer that I used to buy in BC where it was made just down the road is $4 cheaper.

Correct. But I guess some rampies want to be making 12/hr and wait 5 years to get on the line and someone is willing to work for 7/hr and get on sooner(or drop dead).

Well, thats what I'm hoping for, not the drop dead part.

I think that aviation is the only industry that "WE" are will to do what we do.

I empty shit out of planes. I'm sorry that you had to hear that. Now your life doesn't seem so bad does it?

I remember back at AC dumping the shitters was the most coveted position. You sat in the lav truck all day and spent about 10 mins at each flight. For senior guys making 24 bucks an hour it was the easiest way to put in their time. At AC I made 13.50 an hour but with all the union dues, health plan, and uniforms deductions I ended up making as much as I did at 8$/hr. Anyway good luck to all the rampies and I hope that your ramp days are numbered.

making 10/hr with dental, non-rev on company A/C. Westjet and Air Canada too.

3 weeks paid vacation/yr for part-time work

On the down side this is a ramp job and thats about it... not a place for a newbie to eventually get the right seat.

Axial Flow - Compressor

I'm sorry but I don't work at AC "The peoples airline"

I don't make that kind of money and I DON"T sit in a truck to empty the lavs with a truck, I DO IT BY HAND, I have to take it out and empty it out.

I hope that one day I have a gravy job some day.

"Easiest way for senior guys making $24/hr to put their time in" And some people wonder why A/C is in so much trouble!! LOL Thats more than I make flying their planes!! I agree that some companies use their rampies as almost slave labour. All for the chance at the glory life of a pilot!!! :D

I was making 13$/hr @ American Eagle plus the non-rev stuff...

Disagree on the money issue

Post by Gards »

Guys I disagree with some of you by saying what you are getting paid doesnt really matter. It took me a couple years to realize what I was doing when all I wanted to do was get into an airplane, with that attitude. But I also never had some really knowledgeable guys trying to tell me what it was like in the reall world of aviation. A lot of you low timers frequent this forum and you read all the posts about the older guys saying dont work for free, your time is worth something, etc.... I am not going to blab on about that but when I see kids working at burger king in fort mac making 12 buck an hour it sort of upsets me. I realize to get into the industry you have to sacrifice a lot, because I was there not long ago. I also dont agree bag chuckers should be making 26 buck an hour. For the amount of money we spend on our education and the time we put in the common attitude between us pilots should be the same goal! I know you have to put in your time and deal with the lumps that come with starting out, but dont lose the attitude that you should be looking for your chance to make things differnt. As time goes on know when to ask for what you think is right and dont believe that your time is worth nothing.

http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/burgerking.php

Should this guy be making more then you? If you answer yes then volunteer at the airport and stick to private flying some of us are trying to make a living at this!

What does "Non-rev" mean? Does it mean non-revenue flight as in a ferry flight?
