iPad Pilots

Post by DaveC »

Hey guys. I recently purchased a 3G iPad 32GB for flying purposes. Before I get trolled, I understand it is no replacement for a real flight GPS or charts (I always keep both of these with me) so no worries there.

Since i've got an iPhone 4 I was thinking I could tether my iPad to my iPhone 4 (cheap data sharing) and hope that iPad would still use have its GPS functionality. I've seen in other posts on AvCanada that there are bluetooth GPS receivers (BadElf or GNS 5870) and i'm wondering if that would the addon GPS receivers would work better than the assisted GPS built into the iPad (plus cost savings per month).

On a side note, what are your favorite iPad apps for flying? Right now I use

myE6B for quick calculations
ForeFlight
Air Nav Pro
Altitude (in the event my altimeter ever breaks :D)

The ipad GPS works off the 3G network. If you're flying you'll probably want to add an external unit that uses nav sattilites.

I have been using Foreflight when flying in the states for months now. It works great and I have never had an issue with it. Mind you both crew members have our iPads charged and in the cockpit incase of an issue. I just recently was at Sporty's and bought a GNS 5870 as an impulse buy. What a great add-on to ForeFlight!! The 5870 is interfaces with the iPad through bluetooth. The unit is about the size of a pager and I just toss it on the dash when flying. The GPS is a 30 channel unit and has good accuracy. For IFR I would never use it for a GPS, but it does give a nice representation on a LO or HI chart of your location and route. It doesn't seem to suck anymore juice out of the iPad by using the 5870. The unit is also rechargeable and has a 10 hour battery life. An other benefit is when flying with passengers and they ask me where we are, I pass back my iPad with the VNC on it and they can see our altitude, speed, route, ETA and present location. Passengers love it!!

I also boat on the Great Lakes and just tried the 5870 with a marine charting program I downloaded and it works awesome with that as also. So it looks like I also acquired a new chart plotter for my boat!!

Do you have the 3G model or the Wi-Fi one? Only thing I don't like about ForeFlight is that there are no Canadian charts. Have you tried Air Nav Pro?

I have the 32Gig iPad 1 in WiFi. I need a new computer this year and am not upgrading to an iPad 2. The wifi version works great with the 5870! I have only used ForeFlight. While it doesn't have Canadian approach plates, the USGS charts tend to cover the southern part of Canada (especially in Ontario and Quebec where I do much of my flying). Yes I know I'm flying Canadian airspace with US charts, but I always have the up to date Canadian LO onboard in paper, but now tend to never pull it out! In the US, we never get paper anymore for plates or charts! Its iPad all the way baby!

Question to users, how do you find using the ipad at night for approach charts? Isn't it super bright?

The first approach at night I did, the iPad burnt my eyes out of the scokets even with the brightness turned to the bottom. I felt like a dumb dumb when I found out ForeFlight has a dimmer in the settings menu that further dims the screen. Since finding that option I have been able to dime the screen to the point it is comfortable.

FYI iPad users that are EAA members, EAA is doing a webinar next week on Flying with the iPad on May 17th

https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/994207723 (not sure if that link will work or not)
Webinar Registration
Presenter: Bret Koebbe, Senior/Check Instructor, Sporty's Academy
Host: Charlie Becker, EAA

The iPad has quickly become a great fit in the cockpit. In this webinar you'll learn how to make the most of the iPad both on the ground and in the air. You'll learn about the latest apps geared for flight training, those useful for VFR & IFR pilots in the airplane, accessories for securing and mounting the iPad in the cockpit, and useful tips & tricks.

Another thing you can do is triple-click the home button (this may need to be set up in "settings-general-accessibility" - set "toggle white on black" ) - this reverses the black and white on the screen, essentially, and makes night viewing of documents much easier on the eyes.

Amazing! Thanks for the tip! I just got the ipad2 3G and I am absolutely loving it. That toggle tip will be great for night!

If you use Jepp charts on the ipad, there's a button on the top right of the Jepp app that lets you dim/brighten the screen within the app itself.

This is not accurate. The Ipad (and Ipad 2) internal GPS comes in 2 flavors: the wifi-only model has an assisted GPS, which means it's not a 'real' gps unit and requires an internet connection to function. The 3G ipad has a 'real' gps built-in, which works with no data connection required (ie at altitude). That being said, the 'real' gps on the ipad isn't the strongest receiver and likely could benefit from the addition of a bluetooth standalone GPS unit.

One other thing to note is that in order to have GPS functionality, you need to make sure that "airplane mode" is OFF (in the settings menu). If airplane mode is on, it shuts off the 3g, wifi AND gps.

I'm waiting for Jepp to add airborne weather capability (through a bluetooth XM receiver) and geo-referencing on the approach charts to make it perfect - once that happens we'll be able to throw away our finicky tablet computers and go straight ipad in the cockpit.

I just looked this up and I think I'm more confused about the whole thing than before I read about it.

Basically the iPad gps wether it be 3G or wifi is unreliable/ unusable. To have a reliable accurate gps overlay in an iPad app there are a couple different external after market units that connect via Bluetooth. The unit I have is the gns 5870 and I'd highly recommend it if you want moving map capability on your iPad. Just remember it is not approved and does run on batteries as does the iPad. So monitor your battery power!

I'm old school, I'd probably need 40 hrs of ground school to figure those things out.

Does Jepp have Canadian Charts for use on the iPad?

Yes. You download the Jepp app, and enter the serial number of your Jepp subscription. Assuming you have a spare slot open and that you have a subscription to Canadian charts, it'll automatically download 'em to the iPad. If you don't have a sub, you'll need to contact Jepp and get one.

Only approach plates (airport/taxi charts, approaches, STARs, SIDs).
No enroute charts (HO/LO/VNC)

Another question. If its a commercial flight with two pilots, and both have an ipad or the like, is there still a requirement to carry paper charts?

Ok, I guess I should've been more specific when I asked. I was looking for something with VNC's, LO charts would've been nice too.

I guess they have the same problems obtaining the data in electronic format from Nav Canada that everyone else does.

Thanks!

Now having at least 3 applications for an ipad, I'm considering buying one.. Just the WiFi version as I don't see me needing the 3G (or wanting to pay for yet another mobile subscription!).

My question is how big?

16,32 or 64 Gb.

Applications, Foreflight (eventually) & doing presentations, most likely some games etc.. Music, I'll leave on my ipod.

Suggestions?

I bought the 3g variant because I wanted the one with the real gps reciever, and that only comes on the 3g variant. I didn't buy a data plan for it, no need, I have lots of other data plans. The gps works fine, even without the 3g activated.

If you do want the wi fi version only but want the gps feature you can buy a bad elf gps unit for 99.00 online. Works Great.

New version, Jeppesen FD now has high and low charts with what appears to be a simple VFR overlay.
