Can I log Ultralight time as piston PIC?

Post by aftstrake »

Hey all,

Got a question regarding time in an ultralight.
Looking to build cheap PIC time and this looks like the way to go financially.
I have searched the transport website for info on this and couldn t find much. The only thing stated is that transport recognizes 50 hrs of PIC on an ultra lite towards the 1500hrs in an ATPL.
My question is can more time be counted as PIC?
For example, if a job posting requires 1000hrs PIC and I have 800 on cessna's,etc. and 200 on Ultralight aircraft will this time count as single piston PIC..

Cheers.

A quick look over your logbook will show that your time is on ultralight. You want to be careful not to appear to be misleading the employer. Ultralight time is ultralight time, and it is often not always looked upon the same as non-ultralight time, whether justified or not. I did train a fellow a C208 once who had almost exclusively ultralight time with the exception of what he needed to get a Commercial Pilot's Licence. He was a fine pilot, but it took him a while to get used to the size of the aircraft. Other employers, depending on the type of work may or may not care whether your time is on ultralights or not, it would have to be a case by case basis.

Thnx for the response...
I guess what im actually looking for is the official transport answer.
Ill use another example here.
Lets say Joe Blow has 2500 hrs (200 PIC) and the majority (2300) is SIC turbine. Joe blow works at a company that has a requirement of 500 PIC to go Captain.
Can Joe buy an Ultralight and LEGALLY fly it PIC to log the remainder PIC time needed...

Thanx again.

I asked Transport about this a few years ago. You get credit for 50 hours towards your total time, nothing else. The PIC requirement must be met on aeroplanes, not ultralight aeroplanes. Likewise, you can't give float ratings even if you get 50 hours on floats in an ultralight because it isn't the same category of aircraft.

In your example, did Joe logged 300 hours in a Lazair twin-engine ultralight to meet the 500 hrs PIC requirement? :)

In Canada, we have ultralights that weight up to (something close to) 1200 lbs. Some Cub like aircrafts fit in this category. But they are still ultralight.

Maybe you should look into buying a used amateur built aircraft. They are considered real aircraft, they don't have an "I" in their registration, you can carry a passenger(s), models that are less popular can be bought for less than some ultralights.

All of the comments previously stated regarding credits are stricktly for licenses and ratings.

I would think your question is more operator/insurance company specific. Time is time, don't sell yourself short but don't try to be be 'sneaky' about it and call it something it's not. I incorporate my gliding time into my resume and clearly break my time down as such. I do not total my PIC times together -- they are still broken down. No need to hide that fact that you have additional skills and qualifications on a variety of categories IMO. I have heard of insurance on an RG where glider time with retractable gear was sufficient enough to please the insurance company. I am sure this is different from one company to the next.

I think there's a contradiction in the question you posed (which makes it unclear what you're asking):
guess what im actually looking for is the official transport answer.

The company's requirement to give you a job is up to them; they can decide if you qualify or not depending on their own definitions.

Transport Canada on the other hand is concerned with the issuing of licences, ratings etc, and their requirements are different and written in the CARs.

Is that any help?

I feel for TC.

The impression I get from your posts is that you are one of the ones who jumped into the right seat and now find you can not move across the cockpit as you do not have enough PIC time..so you are into plan B...find a cheap creative way to get your PIC time.

I also think the other posters are correct. This is not a TC issue, but one with you and your employer and their insurance company..

If I have the correct impression,
You might just want to have a chat with them about whether they will accept it or not. the legalitiy of it may not be an issue with them, and may depend on whether they think you actually need some command time or just need to meet a requirment. there is a difference, and unfortunately to many employers have told pilots...geee,,,we would like to upgrade you but you are short of PIC time....when they actually mean...we would not trust you to command a baggage cart..You can be controlled as an FO, but no way are we going to upgrade you
Talk it over with your employer. If it is just a requirement only issue, I am sure they will help any way they can. If not, you had best know it now so you can go to plan c...looking for a IC job.

Personally, I'd feel a little odd if the majority of my 500 hours of multi time was gained on the CRICRI multi engine homebuilt...

http://www.flight.cz/cricri/english/cri ... iption.php
http://www.alpineworldwide.com/alpine_g ... roject.htm

That said, I think saw one for sale real cheap. COPA ads I think.

But then, I probably wouldn't feel bad about logging Lancair time, if I had the cash to buy one and cruise around in the 18-20,000 alt bands.

I think experimental time logging is a bit subjective in its value.

depends on the plane.

There are a lot of experimental out there that fly circles around a 172, and have more than equivelant instrument systems.
