Almost everyone got what he wanted in terms of base, it worked out well.

Good bunch of guys.

Where are you getting this from, I don't see it anywhere in the Rumor Mill section.

General short-term industry instability? Air Transat merger + major Thomas Cook expansion? Who knows aside from those that know (and they dont post on here).

I sure hope the hiring continues though, lonely at the bottom

A number of Check "A"'s on the "Classic" DH8 went over to the Q400. It was originally conceived (thought, call it what you wish) that these Check Pilots would be able to continue flying the Classics, or at least continue to do so until the Q400 shows up. TC (Transport) nixed that idea, such that there is now a backlog of line checks for newly type rated pilots. These check pilots can continue to do line checks from the jumpseat, however this cannot be done with a newly rated pilot. This is perhaps one possibility as to why the ground schools have been stopped.

As to musings of merger talk between Thomas Cook and Transat, I doubt that would have any impact in the short term given the regulatory approval process would take some time. Remember that most of the flying done by Jazz caters to the CPA with AC.

The next equipment bid is out later this summer and that will probably give a clearer picture as to what is going to be required.

I hesitate to even ask this on AV Canada but this thread has been very good so far so WTH!

Does anyone know if it's possible to defer a Ground School offer?

It sounds a little odd, I know. I'm hoping for a call one-way or the other with regards to the June GS. I've been told that HR should have the required numbers by Wednesday the 25th and will make contact with those who are lucky enough to receive an offer at that time. In my case, I work overseas, two months on and two off. I'm scheduled to leave on Friday the 27th and have my ticket in hand. I know of one co-worker a few years ago that was able to defer one GS and then took the second. I was hoping that this practice still exists for two reasons. #1. With the massive, yet acceptable, pay cut I will be taking, a little time overseas would help out greatly... and #2. I just don't want to pull the two-week notice card on my current company. They have their faults to be certain and two weeks is all that is required, but logistically, it's not really fair.

Any intelligent answers would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

CK

Hey Kang.

I don't know if they will defer any as right now there is such a shortage of pilots. That said though when I started in early 07 they were hiring like mad, when I was given the offer I was actually given 3 gnd schools that I was able to choose from. (I talked with the recruiter alot though so he knew the base I was really hoping for)

I cannot say if they will do this today though as today is a new era with new recruiters, however if you explain that you want the job but have been treated extremely well so you want to give as much notice as possible they may help ya out, It never hurts to ask.

Cheers

Remember... if you defer your GS you are also deferring your seniority. Worst case scenario though you could lose upwards of 80 numbers (4 classes in 2 months at 20 pilots/class and assuming you draw last in the 4th GS).

Short term monetary gain could turn into long term reserve pain if you end up riding the bottom of the list for a few years.

I spoke to a nice lady in HR about this a few weeks ago. It is possible to ask to defer to a latter GS. Of course the negative implications of this have been already mentioned.

Why would one be worrying about deferring a groundschool date if there is significant talk of classes being cancelled for the time being. Just wondering where the information of Wednesday May25 is coming from and also if one has spoken to HR just recently about deferring a start date there must be more information on what may be happening with the last couple of summer classes. Anyone care to comment.

All that thought about what to do with a groundschool offer, did you receive that call today?

CK,
After you are aboard you will realise how foolish it is to defer. Your number is everything!!
I know two Canadian pilots who were two numbers apart in the same class. The senior guy got an upgrade seven years sooner than the junior guy. Extreme case, but true!
Take the groundschool.

I appreciate all the opinions guys... truly, but if a seniority number was important to me, I'd have applied years ago.

It's just a lifestyle thing for me and mine has changed.

With this new contract, I think Jazz would be a fantastic place to work!

All the best to those who are waiting to hear.

Your seniority number is your ticket to lifestyle. The better the number, the better the lifestyle, no matter which seat you occupy. Christmas and summer holidays, good overnights, or no overnights. These are things which are concretely connected to your number. Get a good one!

I'd have to agree about seniority. The job can be very different for one person then it is for another and it's usually related to seniority. One jazz guy might be enjoying a beer on a patio during an overnight in a great spot after an easy day of flying and then off for the weekend while another guy is sitting in a crappy hotel on a Saturday night in the middle of nowhere after a brutal day of flying.
It's all because of the number.
