Re: Episode 2 Teaser of Dust Up ~ A Sprayer's Paradise
Just watched the show tonight and they have the characters pretty well formed. Son and Father issues aka California Choppers and the new kid on the block. I think it might gain some traction...little bits of history thrown in with original newsreels...all in all not a bad show and like someone said, there are airplanes in it..can't be all bad.

Re: Episode 2 Teaser of Dust Up ~ A Sprayer's Paradise
Tats aside, lots of great pilots trained themselves doing this type of work and other specialty flying. How do you think all these different types of flying started, someone had to train themselves?
Re: Episode 2 Teaser of Dust Up ~ A Sprayer's Paradise
Does anyone know why C-FHFD crashed? There does not seem to be many records of the incident on the net. Does anyone have first hand information? Thanks!
Re: Episode 2 Teaser of Dust Up ~ A Sprayer's Paradise
Just watched it...what a bunch of amateur rednecks! Our local crop-spraying operation is lightyears away from this in terms of professionalism (and they've never had any accidents AFAIK). It does make great TV, though. I'm guessing the producers scoured the country looking for the most interesting crop dusters they could find.

You got me on that one for sure but its for TV and the pilot population is quite small so the average dumbed down watcher would find that quite exciting I think but sure lots of BS, no argument which is probably why it might succeed

You may be a Redneck pilot if:
1. Your stall warning plays DIXIE.
2. Your cross-country flight plan uses flea markets as check points.
3. You think sectionals should show trailer parks.
4. You've ever used moonshine as AV Gas.
5. Your wheel pants have mud flaps with a chrome silhouette of a
reclining nude.
6. Your toothpick keeps poking your mike.
7. You've ever taxied around the airport just drinking beer.
8. You wouldn't be caught dead in a Grumman Yankee.
9. You use an old sweet mix sack as a wind sock.
10. You constantly confuse "Beechcraft" with "Beechnut".
11. You've never flown a nose wheel airplane.
12. You refer to formation flying as "We got us a convoy."
13. Your matched lightweight flight luggage is 3 grocery bags from
Piggly Wiggly.
14. You have a gun rack in the window.
15. You have more than one roll of duct tape holding your cowling on.
16. You figure mud! and manure in your weight and balance calculations.
17. You siphon gas from your tractor to go flying.
18. You've never landed at an airport though you've been flying for over
20-years.
19. You've ever ground looped to avoid hitting a cow.
20. You consider anything over 500-ft AGL as High Altitude Flying.
21. There are parts on your aircraft labeled "John Deere."
22. You don't own a current sectional, because you use Texaco road maps.
23. There's a brown streak down each side of your airplane; exhaust on
the right side and tobacco on the left.
24. You have to buzz the strip to chase off the livestock before
landing.
25. You use an old parachute for a portable hanger.
26. You've ever landed on Main Street for a cup of coffee.
27. The tread pattern, if any, on all three of your tires is different.
28. You have a pair of fuzzy dice hanging from the your Magnetic
Compass.
29. You put straw in the baggage compartment so your dogs don't get!
cold.
30. You've got Bush bumper stickers on each side of the vertical fin.
31. There are grass stains on the tips of your propeller.
32. You have a bumper sticker on your plane that reads "I'd rather be
fishing."
33. You navigate with your ADF tuned to AM country stations.
34. You think an ultra light is a new sissy beer from Budweiser.
35. Just before the crash, everybody on the UNICOM freq heard you say,
"Hey Y'all-Watch This!"

That's the same reason Ice Pilots uses Buffalo instead of Borek. Borek's professional flying just wouldn't interest the trailer park crowd.CpnCrunch wrote:Just watched it...what a bunch of amateur rednecks! It's TV........Like most shows today, you need some drama(father/son confrontations) just like Ice Pilots. People will watch, and thats all they want.iflyforpie wrote:That's the same reason Ice Pilots uses Buffalo instead of Borek. What do you think will be the basis for the next new series, glider towing?

Re: Episode 2 Teaser of Dust Up ~ A Sprayer's Paradise
There should really be a show about people learning to become pilots. Flight schools are hilarious places, it's a whole other world. You've got commercial guys mixed with Air Cadets mixed with people who just want to learn to fly all with varying degrees of money, education and experience. Instructors are a whole other social category in and of themselves. Great TV for sure.
I watched the season premier of Dust Up over the weekend (hurray for PVR) I wasn't really impressed. I thought it was irresponsible to show the crash and the lucky to be alive pilot without ever giving and explanation as to what caused the accident, why the plane was uninsured, where transport Canada was etc.
It seems to me it was portrayed as "Oops. Now I gotta go ask my dad for another plane". Incidentally it seems like the show isn't about flying, it's about a family feud.
Say what you want about it, Ice Pilots seems to me to be about flying and what can happen and how to deal with it and Flying Wild Alaska is about flying in bad weather and Alaskan terrain - both are more about flying than about family drama.
I watched the show intrigued about the world of crop spraying and I'm disappointed to have learned nothing about it.
Just my opinion.

I've already got enough glider towing drama at my own airport. Even just listening to the radio is entertainment.warbirdpilot7 wrote:

Student pilot on solo in the 2-33 "Glider ground, where is the airspeed indicator?"
New tow pilot "The oil pressure is past the red!" Owner who isn't an AME "Don't worry, that's normal..."

Just incase people didn't know, you can watch any of these shows on line. Less commercials than watching on TV. Here's the link.

It's perfectly ok for the airframe not to be insured...the law only requires that you have third party insurance. My guess is that the insurance company looked at the facts and (correctly predicting that there would be a big claim in the not-to-distance future) quoted them a very high premium or refused them hull insurance entirely!

Re: Episode 2 Teaser of Dust Up ~ A Sprayer's Paradise
Who in their right mind would want to watch a show about student pilots and instructors unless maybe the instructor was sleeping with the students wife...these shows are all scripted and dumbed down including ice pilots so that the general public will find them interesting. Half if not all the stuff is made up just like all the other reality shows and the average dumbed down watcher really eats it up. If you haven't already noticed there is a formula for these reality shows that they all follow beginning with the show that started it all... Survivors. Now Dusters/Ice Pilots has some cool flying shots just like the other shows so enjoy that but don't actually believe this stuff.

Re: Episode 2 Teaser of Dust Up ~ A Sprayer's Paradise
To any prospective ag pilots out there...
This show is just another illustration of why we are better off without television. "Dust Up" is just what the aerial application industry doesn't need - an overly dramatized depiction of how the least professional of the operators work. I wouldn't hire them to spray my field much less fly my airplane. In two episodes I haven't seen no nomex gloves or chemical respirators, but have seen plenty of unstrapped helmets, dangerous maintenance practices, poor pilot decision making, and a couple of air reg violations thrown in for good measure.
If you are interested in a career in agricultural aviation, spend some time working on the ground for a reputable commercial operator to learn the business. The flying is about 25% of it.(Karl???) You also have to understand entomology and plant pathology, micro-meteorology, aircraft maintenance, small business financing and operation, etc. etc. etc. And if it comes up in conversation with an operator, I wouldn't even admit to having even heard of the TV show.
My qualifications to post this??? 3100 hrs ag, (Pawnee, Brave, Ag Cat.) Never put a scratch on an airplane or hit a wire. Partly luck, partly judgement and caution.
Good luck with the "bax 'n forthing."

Thanks, sportingrifle. Exactly how I feel.
Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release from the little things; knows not the livid loneliness of fear, nor mountain heights where bitter joy can hear the sound of wings.

No, they didn't have to scour too much of the country...CpnCrunch wrote:Just watched it...what a bunch of amateur rednecks! http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/arts-a ... 08068.htmlThe idea for Dust Up came from Bud's own daughter, Shannon Jardine, who's an executive producer of the series, as well as one its stars. Shannon left the family farm to become an actress over a decade ago, but her Prairie roots have long inspired her.
Re: Episode 2 Teaser of Dust Up ~ A Sprayer's Paradise
Information about the crash portrayed on Episode #1 of Dust Up.
From the Transport Canada Website...
On June 13, 2010, a Piper PA-25-235 had just taken off from Nipawin, Sask., to conduct aerial spraying when the pilot observed a partial loss of engine power. As the pilot turned the aircraft clear of built-up areas to jettison the chemical load, the engine lost all power. The aircraft descended and collided with trees on the east bank of the Saskatchewan River. The aircraft came to rest, inverted with substantial damage The pilot sustained serious injuries. TSB File A10C0085.
There is also an interview with him that unfortunately did not make it into the show:

Did they ever determine why the engine quit?
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Wow that's where I first learned to fly. Spent a year in Nipawin and Codette, beautiful place and still think of it. Nicley done!

Would like to see more actual flying rather than just talking about how they are going to do it....
I guess I should write something here.
