Flight Dispatcher as a career
I would like to get some information as to how to go about obtaining my TC dispatch license(s). Last year I graduated from the Aviation Management program at Georgian College and have had problems finding positions that are suitable for myself. I am really not interested in throwing bags or doing ramp work with this kind of education. In May I finished off a winter contract with an airline so I am now without a job. A few people have told me that dispatching might be a good path for me. I have no flying background and my ground school knowledge is quite rusty. I know York U and a few other operators offer the program but it's quite expensive (around $2K IIRC) for essentially 2 weeks of school. Are there any self study guides available for the TC exams?

Chartright at the north end at yyz is hiring flight followers/coordinators, this is a good position to get into to start a career in dispatch. You'll learn a lot from a company like this while studying for your licence.
The licence itself is two fold. First, you write two exams at TC, one weather related and the other operational and planning. Once you have passed the exams, you need to have a job with a type A dispatch company, do the training with them and pass a TC inspector check, they basically sit with you on a shift and make sure you do everything correctly. They may ask questions such as emergency preparedness, plans, ability to get a hold of an a/c enroute, so on....
The York program is supposed to be geared well to those that don't have a flying background, though it is a bit pricey. Not sure who else would offer a program to be honest. I think a company like Chartright, GGN, Sprint, anyone like that would give you a great grounding while you study.

I remember the dispatch exams being free. Also I called a TC Office and they helped me get the study guides. This was approximately five years ago.

The study guide can be found at:

It is a certificate and after the TC exams you must find employment with a company that has either a Type "A" or "B" Operational control system. Your exams are only valid for a certain length of time which I forget.
As mentioned there is study guides available on the TC web page and they you can download them for free.
Call your local TC office and ask for an inspector who is involved in flight dispatch which should be someone in what used to be the CBA division.
