Injured soldiers deserve stronger show of gratitude . . .
http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/woun ... d-soldiers
Forget our differences of 'why' we are in Afghanistan - clearly we as a Nation do not do nearly enough for our returning veterans - specifically our injured Professional Soldiers who put everything on the line for us.
As we have Professional Soldiers on AvCanada - what as Canadians can we do, offer, support - to change this.
Rarely do I support (if at all) tax increases - but I'd have no problem paying whatever amount is requested - if it where to go to aid our injured soldiers.
Not just aid them - I mean financially be responsible for them, to lift the burden of finances from their families - I don't care if it's medical, re-training, funding for starting a business, mortgage money or even the down payment, education $$$ for their children, and day to day money to survive.
I'm not talking welfare - these people who we have asked the ultimate from - are owed more than just our gratitude - we pay our fat cat politicians hundred thousand plus pensions - for what???, and our injured soldiers get what exactly???
Any suggestions on what we as average Canadians can do to change this would be welcome - and any enlightenment on what Canada is doing correctly for our soldiers, and where we are lacking would be appreciated.

Re: Injured soldiers deserve stronger show of gratitude . .
A veterans place in social standings is like a bell curve. When theyre on duty they have a very high standing, and unflinching support from their fellow citizens. but the typical soldier who signs up is from a lesser segment of society. Rural, poor, black, from more economically and socially depressed segments of society. Then when theyre tours are over, their exhaulted position in society is over too. For the wounded soldier, especially one with brain damage or psychological trauma, the step down is even more abrupt. Spend some time at your closest homeless shelter. A lot of guys there will tell you about their time in the persian gulf, bosnia, kosovo, some old timers will tell you about cyprus.
Its admirable that people are sympathetic and want to help, and respect the soldiers duty, but be honest. being a veteran comes second to being black, being hispanic, being french canadian, being awkward, being poor, and being from a less than academic background. Thats what needs to be confronted, the cause not the symptom.

Nark, maybe time for you to move on? Every sentence you speak mentions you went off to iraq. we know, we get it, i dont care, three million americans served there, none were chosen cause they were special.
My people however, know how to engage you guys too. google "deadliest day in marines history" if you want more authoratative proof. We were engaged by the romans, the byzantines, the crusaders (five of them i think), mongols, and a series of colonialists. And today were still here, but anyone been to byzantium lately????

Second: i have not been to Istanbul but a man in a funny hat walked through the building that was once the main dedicated Christian building in Constantinople.A building that was given to the Russians at the end of WW1.It was the Bolsheviks who allowed it to stay in control of the local government.A mistake in history that may soon be corrected now that the Communists are nearly all gone.Go ahead and try and goad the new FSB and see what happens to you
I doubt the modern Russian government would refuse the Staights that they have a historic claim to,when the next opportunity arrises. The new Russian policies are very close to the old Tsarist policies (sans a czar)and the Czars wanted the straights.
AA,you will be able to watch the changes in the muddleeast from the comfort of your mums basement while you watch monkey porn on the discovery channel. You will be as powerless to effect any change as the people who live there
On a completly unrelated piece of aviation trivia the Turks had one of the worlds first air forces.
Does anyone know the name of their first Ace ?

Oh and the Ottomans, how could I forget them? Well we put them in the cesspool of history along with the aformentioned examples. The only Russians I saw in Lebanon are the hundreds of russian prostitutes lining the bar stools waiting to make 10 dollars from some Sudanese garbage man. A long way down from being one of two superpowers. But one doesnt spend ten years tangoing with the mujahideen and leave unscathed. A big difference between university students in Vaclav square and the Mujahideen volunteers in Afghanistan, as the Red Army found out. Now the reincarnated, smaller Soviet 2.0 thinks its a superpower? The jews and the ARabs have bought and sold them ten times over since the fall of the USSR.
A military superpower the USA is for sure. But little American kids cant eat F-35's. The Russians learned that lesson 20 years ago (keep up with history, its quite fascinating) when they were dismantling nuclear missiles in exchange for wheat. You were taught a lot of nonsense, too bad for you. An indian immigrant in grade 8 just won the national spelling bee, the 4th year in a row an Indian won it. Maybe teaching your kids to spell would be a better investment than teaching them to drive a Bradley. Or maybe throw the poor kids a science book. 70% of the finalists of the 2011 Intel Science Talent Search Competition last week were children of immigrants or immigrants themselves. All from China India and Iran. westerners are lined up ten deep and a mile long to live and work in Qatar Dubai Bahrain or any place that can give them an opportunity they cant find in the good ol us of a. Well the opportunities are there but cant really compete with the indians and arabs for them.
I heard Canadas getting a new lebanese immigrant, carlos slim, the richest man in the world, son of a grocer is ready to snooker some telecom xec out of a few billion dollars. Meanwhile the second richst lebanese man already owns half of canada. Dont forget the syrian steve jobs, hes doing alright too. What does the rest of amrica have to offer? Crappy cars, a failing stock market, the only product the usa has thats grown every yeara is dead soldiers in afghanistan. And Im sure theres no endless line up of potential investors in that!! what other opportunities are there?

How about bringing them home, and restricting our deployments to matters of self-defence? You don't see the Swiss getting involved with too many overseas adventures - yet, at the same time, they are often mentioned as having a first-rate military.Any suggestions on what we as average Canadians can do to change this would be welcome - and any enlightenment on what Canada is doing correctly for our soldiers, and where we are lacking would be appreciated.
It seems as if the F-35 purchase is becoming increasingly more doubtful. How about getting greater numbers of a less complex aircraft, and spending the 'savings' on other materiel and military benefits?
Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Re: Injured soldiers deserve stronger show of gratitude . .
There was an air force skit on returning veterans and SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS awhile back, i thought it was pretty funny ! Its not about Canadians NOT supporting our own people and their pain and suffering , All normal canucks have a heart and are like that ,,,, As the skit tries to show, is that we have (like every other war in history) glorified and heroized our soldiers for the "cause" of the war! Its a simple delusion to bring canadians on side to the political will and it works quite well thank you . At the end of the day , a killer is still a killer! Murder is still murder and WAR is still BAD !!

My point. I also posted a while ago, that DND will have to sacrifice some programs to pay for the new planes...

Sad they killed the F-22 because it cost too much, now the new F-35 cost even more??It seems as if the F-35 purchase is becoming increasingly more doubtful.
In 2005 the F-22 was 105 million, current F-35 is 133 million with estimated costs hovering at 1 Trillion Dollars for the program - USA is already recommending cutting their order in half.
With so much invested, I don't see anyway the F-35 would be canceled, especially with the new J-20 in China flying.
Harper has a blank cheque waiting to be cashed, and with a majority Government - there is no way we're not buying them now!!

$12 Billion For Them - 1.5 Million Homeless For Us
By Frosty Wooldridge
6-16-11
Does anyone possess a clue as to why our U.S. government spends $12 billion every 30 days in Afghanistan and Iraq while 1.5 million of our citizens remain homeless and 13.4 million American children live in poverty?
"There are 770,000 homeless children enrolled in public education systems," said a spokesperson at Homeless Support Network.
"On any given night there are 100,000 homeless veterans," said the spokesperson at Homeless Support Network. "At least 3.5 million Americans experience homelessness each year."
What doesn't add up here? Answer: just about everything!
Our government has forced those two bogus wars upon our soldiers with terrible death and injury tolls for the past 10 years. Is it possible that they are not winning on purpose or that they can't win because these wars are unwinnable? Does that make sense? Does it show rational thinking on the part of the military to urge President Obama to continue military operations in those two sandbox, backward and poverty stricken countries? If we can't win in Afghanistan in 10 years in a country that doesn't have a single tank, war plane or radar unit-what's the point?
How can the government force taxpayers to pay $12 billion for two inane wars every month while millions of our citizens live in poverty?
With millions suffering in America, wouldn't it make more sense to spend $12 billion a month on our own people? Wouldn't it make sense to pull them out of poverty by offering jobs, workfare, housing, education and job training?
Exactly what is being accomplished in Iraq and Afghanistan? Answer: absolutely friggin' nothing!
Bin Laden died several months ago. Muslim terrorists can train in a dozen other countries besides Afghanistan. Let's face it; Muslims terrorists train inside the United States at this moment-thanks to our idiot Congress importing 100,000 Muslim immigrants annually. Ask the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Holland, Norway, Sweden, Germany and Denmark about their rapes, bombings, cultural disruption, honor killings and female genital mutilation results with Muslim immigrants.
How could that $12 billion spent on war be used to aid 13.4 million American children? Answer: schools, supplies, food, clothing, tutors and support! The latest news reports show that less than 18 percent of our students know the identity of President Abraham Lincoln. They do not know the three branches of government. They don't know their own senators from their states. But they can "sex-text" while they're driving 70 miles per hour down the expressway!
