Gear up landing at Vernon BC today

Post by crazy_aviator »

A few hours ago, i witnessed a twin beech on short final with the gear up, in the ensuing seconds, the sounds of bending metal could be heard, A/C ending up off the runway close to the end of 23, thankfully, no one hurt, typical gear up damage to the aircraft. In the shower 5 minutes ago, this crossed my mind, COULD I have run to the cockpit of my plane i was working on and call the A/C on final and alerted him to the ensuing crumpled metal and sadness ? Sadly, I think i might have been able to get a quick message across to the pilot, Do i feel ashamed now , A little, I do feel confused as to why i ran towards the plane ( a long way away and increasing distance) When comparing this event with the bystanders at the post game carnage in Vancouver, Do i categorize myself as a bystander? Let me ask you this question , in your life when an incident was unfolding did you A) Leap into action to save the day B) were a bystander C) participated in the carnage and thought nothing of your actions?

BTW, What actually happened MAY be different than the report from castanet that is down the list in avcanada postings ! Either way, its sad to see these planes get crumpled and still there is no reliable way to prevent gear-up incidents

I suspected the Castanet account may have been a little off.
What are the chances of a news outlet getting the facts wrong?

eta:
(what are the chances of all three gear collapsing at the same time after being locked down?)

Probably okay because of all the rain we've had lately, but most times grass burns far easier than tarmac in the Okanagan.

I have got on a parked aircraft's radio before to alert other pilots of hazards (wrong circuit, wrong frequency, other traffic not reporting, wildlife on runway). Better safe than sorry.

The gear are connected mechanically in the Baron so all go up or down at once. Watch a Baron or Bonanza put the gear up or down and none lag behind like hydraulic gears often do.

O.K., understood.
There must be a down lock for each gear though, right? So if a lock failed, is the mechanism strong enough to overcome the other two locks?
(legitimate question)

I've stopped 2 337s from departing with a failed rear engine, sent a few planes back to the ramp with flat nose oleos, 2 tow bars left on, and numerous reports of birds just off of the threshold. I have no issues making reports on the radio about anything I deem unsafe.
