Stay Away From Hospitals

Post by hz2p »

It appears that you should stay away from hospitals, if you want to stay healthy:

http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/ ... ntoNewHome
The outbreak began at a hospital in St. Catharines on May 28 and spread from there. Cases turned up at the Greater Niagara General Hospital and the Welland Hospital on June 23.

There have been 44 total cases in St. Catharines, 15 at Greater Niagara and 15 in Welland.

As a result of the outbreaks, the Niagara Health System called for the infection control team to review their attempts to fight the outbreak. The team visited on June 29.

At least 22 people have died from the C. difficile outbreak. The latest death occurred on the weekend at Guelph General Hospital.
Keep in mind that hospital-induced death is the 4th leading cause of death, behind the usual suspects (cancer, circulatory system, etc).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nosocomial_infection
United States: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that roughly 1.7 million hospital-associated infections, from all types of bacteria combined, cause or contribute to 99,000 deaths each year. Other estimates indicate that 10%, or 2 million, patients a year become infected, with the annual cost ranging from $4.5 billion to $11 billion.

Not a bad idea for a fear mongering post like this. Anyway, my wife works at the Greater Niagara Hospital (bless her pension) and she has to deal with people with your state of mind every day. Mind you, they're usually 75 years +, because C-Dif is generally only a significant threat to the elderly. So why are there so many deaths in our region? Because a large majority of the people in this region are indeed in their elder years.

It's definitely not all sunshine and rainbows in our healthcare system, but for your tin-foiled hat wearing self to come along and give us the ol' "don't go to the hospital, because that's where people die" is a bit of a stretch. Did you know that most car accidents occur on our nation's roads and highways too? Scary world out there.

It's a shame, you have a rather valid topic to discuss, but extremely poor presentation.

Im sure all of those hospitals have volunteer programs if you want to help instead of point and bitch.

http://www.niagarahealth.on.ca/about/ou ... olunteers/

We look for:
•People whose personal values complement the values of our organization: Compassion, Professionalism and Respect.
•Individuals who have the desire to help others; who are positive, caring, and sensitive to the needs of others.
•Community members who are committed, self-motivated, energetic and customer-service oriented.

That sounds just like you H lol

I have no great love of the NHS (and know many people who work in the area hospitals that feel likewise); however, they're actually handling this quite well.

St. Catharines General is a very old hospital, well past it's prime, and I think the staff face a lot of challenges keeping it up to par. Hopefully the new hospital will be finished soon. GNGH & Welland are both excellent, with great staff.

This recent C.Diff outbreak sucks, but it could happen to anyone.

We recently had a family member in hospital last weekend, and I can tell you from our first hand experiences that they're doing a great job.

Any hospital is a hotbed for all sorts of disease and infections as are shopping malls and grocery stores, ball parks, schools and any other place there are people. The only way to avoid contact at all is to live in a bubble. This topic is laughable.

If we don't naturally have C. diff in our gut, how do we get this infection? C. diff has two forms, the infectious active C. diff that cannot survive in an environment for a long period of time and a non-active, non-infectious form that can survive in the environment for a long period of time. This non-infectious form of the bacteria is called "spore". These spores remain non-infectious but if and when they reach the gut they can then grow into the infectious form of bacteria. Spores can be found almost anywhere: on bedpans, furniture, toilet seats, linens, telephones, stethoscopes, keyboards, fingernails, rings (jewelry), floors, infants' rooms, and diaper pails. The spores get on objects like these from contact with feces of those who are infected (just think not washing your hands after using the bathroom). So, yes, it is contagious. Research also shows that the airborne dissemination of C. difficile occurs commonly but sporadically.

Yes, and far more so than other public places, because of the percentage of sick and contagious people there. If you don't comprehend the previous sentence, I'm not sure I can help you understand it any better.
This topic is laughable
Then why did you bother posting to it? I'm sure the 100,000 people that died last year in US hospitals from diseases they caught in the hospital think their deaths were pretty laughable, too.

Pilots stay away from doctors and hospitals with good reason - they're healthy, and they want to stay that way. Don't go to Emergency because you're feeling bad about your life, and you want some quack to write you a prescription for some happy pills. Go to Emergency when you have bone poking out of your skin, and the risk of catching a disease there is justified by the necessary medical treatment.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cost-benefit_analysis for illumination in this regard.
