I need help with flight dispatcher course in Canada

Post by Ome »

Hi guys,

I'm taking course in University of Ottawa and I decide to take course in Flight Dispatcher because it needed in my country, as I read in some web site that dispatcher course will not be longer than 5 weeks. However I was looking for school in Ottawa or near I couldn't found. I need some help, I'm new in Canada and my English not so bad and not so good.

I have to take AFF dispatch license to get the job, NOW what I need to do? do I have to improve my English to take this course or if I prepare for the course I cane take it ?, where is the nearest school to Ottawa if there is no school for dispatcher in Ottawa?

any advice or suggest will help me

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE

There aren't a lot of dispatch courses in Canada, there are a couple in Toronto (including Air Georgian who advertises on this site) and Atkinson college (part of York University) there is at least one at SAIT in Calgary. (links are on the Canadian Dispatcher Organization website: http://www.canadiandispatchers.org/links.html ) These courses are typically two weeks in length and will prepare you to write the Transport Canada Generic Dispatch Examinations - two written tests, one on operations and one on meteorlogy. They are not a dispatch license, but are required before you can enter an certified dispatcher position in Canada - the employer then provides 'On The Job' training for a period of time, you then do a 'Competency Check' where an examiner will observe and test and test you in a real work environment. Your certification is then valid only at the airline you work for, and is renewed annually with recurrent training and competency check.

There are other courses, some of them a bit longer, in the US (typically between 2 and 6 weeks). http://www.aviationschoolsonline.com/sc ... ools/5.php These will lead you to an FAA Dispatch license, some offer additional training in areas like International Flight Planning after you're licensed. However, there is currently no Airline Dispatcher course that I know of that leads to a diploma or degree.

Hey there,

I second the "no dispatcher course in Ottawa" that is unfortunate. I am just trying to understand what you exactly need so here are 2 scenerios.

1. You need to be prepared to write the Transport Canada/FAA dispatch exams. In this case its just a matter of studying the right materials. You can obtain a study guide for the dispatcher exams from the Transport Canada website. ***It is just a guide though, so basically you have to seek the info from the CAR's and the AIM plus you need to understand flight theory and meteorology.**
There is another option though you can purchase a dispatcher course from Culllhane's which helped me quite a bit. It is a bit pricy(about $400 or so), it covers everything you need to know plus some! It includes a study book and an exam book both for FAA and Transport Canada exams.

2. You actually need to take a credited course. In this case your best bet is to come to Toronto for a few weeks and complete a course(it may be shorter or longer). I would give Air Georgian a call as well as York University as they both offer these courses. They only prepare you to write the exams so if you are looking for a diploma this is not it. As a matter of fact there are no diplomas for a flight dispatcher.

I hope this helps and makes sense. THE EXAMS ARE FREE TO WRITE FROM TRANSPORT CANADA!!!! Your employer actually certifies you as a dispatcher. Keep that in mind but you do need both exams written. I passed both the exams first shot but I am also a pilot so it helped alot. They are the most difficult exams I have ever written and I have written all the exams so just beware that you need to really put in alot of effort.

Good Luck.

Hi,

I know this post is old, but I hope someone can answer my question :-)

I just started to study for the dispatcher exams on pilottraining.ca ... They don't mention anything about needing a flight computer or a plotter for the course. Which leads me to the question.. Are there any calculations involved in the exams? Therefore requiring a flight computer? Or it's all theory?

Thanks in advance!

Hey,

To answer your question, you don't really need one, but get one.

The exam is difficult, and you will need to do A LOT of calculations. If you can memorize all the formulas by heart, then you should be able to pass your exam with a normal calculator.

I would suggest getting an Electric E6B or a manual. ( i had both calculators ) Make sure it is approved to be used on the exam by TC ( you can give em a call, or just read online they have a list. )

I don't recall there being a ton of calculations. A CX-2 and a basic scientific calculator should work just fine. All the Met is basically straight out of the Air Command Weather manual.

Yeah, You are right, FDMet is pretty straight frwd. But the FDops had it fair share of calculations to do. It's also filled with charts requiring you to memorize different formulas.
