I just read in Aviation International News newsmagazine the Exxon Mobile are closing all Exxon/Esso Avitat FBO's and getting out of the general aviation refueling business. This includes both USA and foreign facilities.

Was exxon/esso a supplier of 100LL?

If so does this mean in addition to shutting the FBO's they are also ceasing production of avgas?

From what I read, ExxonMobil/Esso are only shutting down the Avitat FBO's. I do not think there is going to be any change in production.
Someone else will take over the FBO's so maybe you will be able to get you 100LL from Honest Chan's discount gas. But, as usual, expect to pay more.
That is until the tree huggers and spotted owl huggers do like they are trying to doing in California with class action law suits designed to cease the production and consumption of ALL leaded fuels.

Why would they decide on a new fuel supplier if Exxon is still producing avgas?

This is kind of confusing...I understand that they're closing the Avitats (Esso FBOs run by Esso) but it isn't very clear about the independent FBOs with the Esso name. I wonder if they will be re-branded or continue with the Esso name.

What I was told from an ESSO dealer, is that it has been decided to "outsource" the ESSO brand of fuel, in order to eliminate the liability from ESSO/EXON. More truthfully, I think it is so ESSO can get out from under the union situation that all Avitat employees are under.
