Elwy Yost — the witty host of programs such as TVOntario's iconic Saturday Night at the Movies and the CBC's afternoon movie show Passport to Adventure — has died of natural causes at 86 at his home in West Vancouver.

Yost was a lifelong movie aficionado who put an educational twist to the shows he hosted for TVOntario and CBC over a decades-long television career, most notably with Saturday Night at the Movies from 1974-1999 and Passport to Adventure from 1965-1967.

Elwy worked at AVRO and was part of the workforce for the Arrow.

Can't say that I'm surprised by Ms. Winehouse's death, but it is a (admittedly small, in the global scheme of things) tragedy for her family and friends, who probably struggled with how to best help her to get her stuff together.

She was possessed of a fantastic voice, an uncanny sense of music history and the good sense to market something that should be unsellable in these most dastardly of modern musical times. I paid attention to Frank and Back to Black, which is a pretty impressive achievement, given my general disgust with anything with a beat these days.
The signs were all there for Amy. And I have to assume that she was bright enough to recognize them. When no less an authority on the matter than Keith Richards calls you out and you don't listen, you just have to assume the presence of a death wish.

That little girl has been playing chicken with death for years now. And yesterday, she won.

With Elway you always received a wider range of movies on Saturday nights. He had an eye for finding lost gems that were both thought provoking and exceptional. I haven’t watched Saturday Night At the Movies in years. He set the bar high.

Someone asked me to have respect for Amy... and well, I figure I have as much respect for her, as she had for herself. Really, what was anybody expecting with that train wreck? To be completely honest, I was surprised to find out she had died - I thought she kicked it awhile ago.

Congratulations on 48 hours sober Amy! You didn't need rehab after all!

And to put Elwy and Amy together is just not right.

And calling her a drug addict seems a bit harsh at this point. I hope she found her peace in the end.
