Lets toss out Gun Control while we are at it. Gun control means hitting your target!

+1!Well now that we have corrected the 1968 mistake and have distinct Military Services again, we can now start thinking about getting rid of the bloody metric system hmmmmmm this could be the beginning of a good old fashion witch hunt for everything Liberal

You must have been in Cold Lake and reading the diatribes written by that tool of a publisher who owned the Grande Centre Sun. It was fine for the locals to treat us like dirt but god forbid if we said "screw you" and went to Edmonton or Calgary to spend our money!Cesard wrote:
I found the attitude of some civilians worse who lived around the bases, too. They invariably looked down upon Forces members from the base as second class citizens, and we got very little respect from the general public around the bases, and even the businesses. They'd happily take our money, but they turned a blind eye to the fact that the base was a huge economic bonus in the area.

Uh, Hellyer is not dead. He was quoted in a newspaper today.
Re: RCAF Coming back??!!!!!!! :)
His also off his rocker, saying that the weaponization of space was going to start an intergalactic war and that world governments disclose alien technology that they have.

Many years ago the "locals" in Moose Jaw were complaining how the people on the base were spending their paycheques in Regina...so the Base Commander called a pay parade and everyone was paid with TWO dollar bills. End of bitching when the city was flooded with the $2.00 notes.

Spectacular, that is probably even better than my idea, free shuttle to Regina for shopping, "No body spends a cent in Town for three weeks."Old Dog Flying wrote:Many years ago the "locals" in Moose Jaw were complaining how the people on the base were spending their paycheques in Regina...so the Base Commander called a pay parade and everyone was paid with TWO dollar bills. Ok fine I'm old enough to think the queen used to be attractive and remember the new fifty with the mounties on the back. Is any of that worth having I have collected a sample of some of them. Of course as with any thing only the big stuff is probably of real value. Don't have a thousand dollar bill and they quit those too. What's that, play money, who's the hot chick on it?

In a previous post, I alluded to why the change occurred, only to say it was Political..
From the Canadian Press
But navy historian David Zimmerman said he's worried the return of monarchist symbols may heighten English-French divisions in the country.
"In the province of Quebec, not many people like to think of the royal connection and there's a lot of French Canadians in the navy as well," he said in an interview.
Within hours of the announcement, francophone commentary was circulating on social media websites, much of it making fun of the name change.
"Now we have royally defective and rusty submarines," tweeted Sebastien Robert, who says he is a member of a sovereigntist party in Quebec.
Pierre Anctil, a professor of history at the University of Ottawa, said Tuesday's announcement marks a surprising shift of Canadian symbols.
"It's a new policy of defining Canadian nationalism," he said from his home in Montreal.
"Francophones will find it difficult to swallow. Reference to the Queen and the British empire isn't likely to please francophones."
Zimmerman, a professor of history at the University of Victoria, suggested political motives are behind the announcement.
"It makes people who are royalists, who are conservatives, who are traditionalists, feel better."
MacKay defended the royal connection, saying denying it is akin to ignoring Canada's history.
"It's a recognition of historic ties to England that simply exist. It's a historic fact," he said in an interview after the announcement
there is no need to "defend" it. I am sick to death of 80% of Canadians kowtowing to Quebec...

X243 years years in the past, and I can still remember how much my dad hated that guy.
The political commentaries are saying that Harper has found another way to poke a stick at the Opposition. The majority of Canadians like the change back--the Opposition oppose any gov't. idea, including a good one--and Harper scores another goal.
Of course there's talk about just being 'Canadian Air Force', Canadian Navy, etc. For historical reasons I really support the Royal title, and of course we still recognize the monarch so to do otherwise would be just wrong.
Good one, Harper! Nice call, Peter Stoffer.

What about the "Vandoo's"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_22e_R%C3%A9giment
"The Royal 22e Régiment is an infantry regiment and the most famous francophone organization of the Canadian Forces"
Would the people that are opposed to Royal because it offends the Francophones support removing the Royal from the Vandoos?

Isn't the Fleur-de-lis associated with the French monarchy in historical contexts? Case in point, the Fleur-de-lis was never adopted offically by any of the French republics. Quebecois and other French Canadians trace their cultural identity back to a time when North America was settled well before the French Royal families' heads were put on the guillotine. But navy historian David Zimmerman said he's worried the return of monarchist symbols may heighten English-French divisions in the country.

I'm all in favour of replacing war with the olympic games, iron chef cook offs, knitting competition, jr science fair or what ever. Until then I support my/our troops.
So is there anyway to go forward with some thing new? Where are all the good PR idea people? Can't we help make our service people proud of their titles and uniforms? I personally think if I'm not an active member or vetran I shouldn't get a vote. That goes for everyone in my opinion. Especially politicians, make decisions on direction for missions but let them pick their own outfits. No?
