Ungava Weather? Advice Please.

Post by Durango skywagon »

So I am planning on departing the North Bay area for Ungava on Monday. The weather outlook seems a bit iffy and the daily forecast in that area has a consistency to it. The forecast for Kangiqsualujjuaq for the next few days is 40% chance of showers and winds 30 km gusting to 50 and 60.

A few questions. Though the weather might be VFR are there float operations happening in that weather? Do the winds generally diminish inland and how far do you need to go if you are seeking a safe harbour? If I time my arrival for the morning am I likely to miss these big winds?

Around here I've been flying in 20 to 20km winds and always find a quiet bay to land in. I think my tendency is to wait for a calmer forecast, but a guy can wait a long time it seems for things to settle down up there.

I am interested in any or all advice for flight planning up there, especially if there are well known safer areas to retreat to if I find myself in worsening conditions etc. If this forecast holds I may opt for sticking closer to the La Grande area.

Thanks!

Brad
