Talk Like A Pirate Day is Sept. 19, 2011

Post by JakeYYZ »

Just in time for the International Talk Like a Pirate Day, the Pirate Party in Germany has made its legislative debut at the state level in Berlin.
The Pirate Party is the biggest winner of the Berlin vote The Pirate Party, however, did clear the 5-percent hurdle and will be represented for the first time in a state parliament in Germany. The Pirate Party, which campaigns for copyright reform, free wireless Internet service for all and greater internet privacy, brought in 9 percent of the vote.
"This is all very new for us," said Andreas Baum, the party's top candidate, on German public television after the election. "We will need to prepare, get into the swing of things, but you will be hearing from us. You can be sure of that."

In Canada, a whole slew of questionable digital policies are set to be rammed through the legislature this fall. These policies will permit the police complete access to all your online communication ... without a warrant!!! And, for those of us who make our phone calls via the internet (our house phone, for example, uses voip), this DOES mean that the police would not need a warrant to listen to our phone calls…

Too bad that the Pirate Party of Canada seems so incompetent, and that there is not a peep from them during this Ontario election.

Don't worry, Jake - if you don't do anything wrong, you've got nothing to fear!

Why not go back to landline? Don't they still have to get a warrant for that?

I love that line and the meaning it transmits....What is being implied is that we want to violate your privacy and charter rights, without any real reason other than we want to know what you are up to.
If you dont like that, it obviously means you have something to hide, ergo, you have done something wrong.
The whole concept behind having to obtain a warrant was to protect people from the police abusing their powers under the guise of rightful investigation. I would agree the pendelum might have swung a little to far that way, but eavesdroppng at the discretion of some authority is way to far the other way.

Anybody that uses that argument is trying to steal my rights just as certainly as a thief tries to steal my property, and I object to both for the same reason.

It is the same type of rational that was used with body scanning, and how long did that take before there were pictures of people being posted or passed around?

Now back to the topic at hand.....arrrrrr Matey, thar she blows, ....

This post bears a striking resemblance to one I replied to on Sunday: http://blog.xanthippas.com/2011/09/18/p ... in-berlin/

The reason that the Pirate Party of Canada has not "peeped" on the Ontario (or the other 3 Provincial elections) is that we are a Federal party and these are Federal (not Provincial) issues. There are efforts to form Provincial Pirate Parties in British Columbia & Quebec. As mentioned in my response at the above URL, I would not be surprised to see Ontario form a Provincial Party soon.

We also encourage all Canadians to learn how to protect their anonymity online. See for example: https://www.pirateparty.ca/uncategorize ... anadians-2

(As this is my first post here, I'll just take a moment and mention that I'm a huge aviation fan and hope one day to build & fly replica WWII fighters)
