I don't know if that video is an exact recollection of what happened, because if it is - then those were pretty hair 30s unless you happened to be current on spiral dives and spins on your 172, which most airline pilots of course are not
By the way, I take your comment to be a lighthearted joke, right?

From another forum:
Now that sounds like a scary design flaw.Actually, this is entirely possible. The door switch on a 737 is next to the rudder trim switch, and it rotates in the same manner. In a swept wing jet, rudder trim will cause a huge rolling moment, in addition to yaw. The trimmer is so powerful, that it can overpower the autopilot roll commands. Result? Aircraft upside down
Re: co pilot flips plane
Design Flaw?
I think someone should actually look at the control before using it if it is that much of an issue.
KNOW YOUR AIRPLANE
No excuse for operating the wrong control.

It's like saying I used the mixture lever instead of the prop lever because I wasn't looking and they kinda feel the same and kinda located at the same place.

Gotta love the media, my local news reported the an ANA airplane nearly went upside down went the "pilot hit the wrong button"
I don't know how many times I've had to swat someones hands away from the "roll inverted" button. Too many close calls with that one and it's right next to the "wings fall off" button to. I guess thats why we get paid the big bucks.....

Re: co pilot flips plane
Ive seen something similar in the sim, where instead of reaching for the trim during a V1 cut, they went for the ignition switch. The switches look/feel the same and are fairly close to each other on my plane.
Every airplane has a potential "design flaw" with them. One thing I've found with the Airbus joystick is how easily you can accidentally disengage the A/P with you knee if you stretch your legs out or when you put your foot on the foot rest. You just need to be careful no matter what you're doing when in the cockpit.

The video is exact! That is directly taken from the FDR.

Re: co pilot flips plane
...and Boeing says they won't touch the flight deck of their new MAX. Only the engine.
It seems to me, Airbus is thinking along the same lines.
I know I don't like this new and improved approach A and B are "spinning" to industry, especially when things like this happen. (With American Airlines close to the brink, what will happen to that ridiculous order for 420 aircraft?)
Confidence and complacency probably played a role in this upset and with no confirm or crosscheck on the flight deck, there but for the grace of god go many pilots. But, hey, like the B737NG upset over the Gulf of Oman, at least they can blame a co-pilot.
The roll looks fairly tame with probably light 'g's experienced during the upset, although flight attendants were injured. I can see it now, more demand for URT, lead by Boeing and Airbus, creators of the URT package.
Gotta love this business.

The comment stereotypes all co-pilots as being incompetent when there are plenty of good FO's out there. Let's not paint all co-pilots with the same brush.tsgas wrote:Unless of course you were a pax on this flt.atpilot wrote:That's a pretty stupid comment.AirMail wrote:http://travel.sympatico.ca/TravelNews/A ... flips_over

Problem with airplanes .. you have to be damned careful when you add something that it does not cause more problems than it cures.
When they added those armoured locking cockpit doors I wondered if they would cause more problems than they cured.

There are also some that should be weeded out . So calling other people "stupid" for what imho , was a tongue in cheek comment , is not constructive towards the advancement of aviation safety.
P.S. he mentioned "a co-pilot" and not "all co-Pilots".
