EDMONTON - A pilot is dead after a helicopter crash Wednesday night near Drayton Valley.

Transportation Safety Board spokesman Chris Krepski said there was only the pilot on board the Bell 206 Jet Ranger when it went down about two kilometres south of Drayton Valley’s airport.

A 911 call reported the crash at about 6:30 p.m. The pilot died at the scene.

Krepski said there was little information available Wednesday night about the incident. A Transportation Safety Board team will travel to the crash site Thursday morning to examine the wreckage.

Drayton Valley is about 140 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.

No loss of power before fatal helicopter crash

EDMONTON - A helicopter was flying at full power when it went down near Drayton Valley on Wednesday night, killing the pilot, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada says.

“(Investigators) determined the engine was producing full power at the time of the accident,” board spokesman Chris Krepski said Thursday.

Two investigators from the federal agency arrived Thursday morning at the scene of the crash, a farm field about two kilometres south of the Drayton Valley municipal airport, 140 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.

The investigators have taken instruments from the helicopter to be examined off-site, Krepski said.

The next step in investigating this type of crash is to analyze weather information, aircraft maintenance records, pilot training records and the contact between the aircraft and air traffic control, Krepski said.

The pilot was alone on board the Bell 206 Jet Ranger and died at the scene when it went down about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The pilot’s name is not being released until his family his notified.

Emergency responders, including Brazeau County and Drayton Valley firefighters, went to the scene after receiving a 911 call.

“The information we have is that it was heard and then reported to us,” Cpl. Marcia McDermott of Drayton Valley RCMP said.

RCMP said the helicopter took off from the Whitecourt Airport en route to the Drayton Valley airport, which is used frequently by oil and gas companies and private pilots, according to the town’s website.

No other injuries or property damage were reported.

Very sad, my condolences to those who knew him.

578 Views and not one member can post something for the families and friends to read? Or is common courtesy only extended when there is a fatal fixed wing accident?

Unfortunately this site is 99% fixed-wingers.

We've actually had a very good year in rotary all things considered, or at least it's seemed that way, sad to hear this. Not sure who the company is just yet, but thoughts go out to family and co-workers.

Two of the people killed in the Stewart crash earlier this summer are from my town, it's been taken very hard.

Thanks for the explanation skys the limit, unfortunately its not much of an excuse. Would expect more from the aviation community, just because the spinning portion of the aircraft is above his head doesnt make this any less of a tragedy.

Stay safe everyone
