Ultralight plane crashes west of Lethbridge

Federal authorities are investigating a light plane crash in southern Alberta that injured the aircraft’s pilot.

The two-seat ultralight with just the pilot aboard crashed in a field on the Piikani Nation west of Lethbridge on Wednesday.

Police said the pilot was able to walk away from the wreck and get help at a nearby home.

An ambulance later took the pilot to hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

The man was en route from Lac La Biche in northwestern Alberta to Twin Butte, about 25 kilometres southwest of the crash site.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Transportation Safety Board, but authorities said the plane had encountered bad weather prior to going down.
