Aviation Safety Letter no longer printed/mailed - Web only

Post by armchair »

Wondering what TC is thinking by stopping the mailout of the ASL to save a few bucks. What else out there is reaching all pilots and AMEs systematically? I dont necessarily like everything in every issue, but I think the mere fact of getting it in the mail and reading about safety makes me think twice about aviation risks. I know I wont read it online, too busy to do that, what gives?

Are you sure that's true? That would be a shame - mailing ASL to every pilot is a good idea. Most fatal accidents are due to pilot error, and all of those errors have been made many times before. It worries me that someone thinks that reading accident reports is 'crap'.

I think that you answered your own question in the first line: "To save a few bucks."

I'm sure that it galls the Government no end to be running a $50 Billion deficit, and so they're on the warpath to save/shave as much money as possible.

'Course we can all boast that we've got low taxes...

I suspect that North Shore has it exactly right... I've no doubt that such a decision is related to the "cost" of printing and mailing without considering the benefits as armchair and CpnCrunch noted.

Of course, if they really do cancel the mail-out version of the ASL, then the argument for reducing the medical "fee" is made much stronger. Some might recall our earlier discussions on the issue related to collection agencies and the history of the last fee "reduction". The rationale in 2000 for making the fee $55 for everyone was, in part:
Over the coming year, Transport Canada intends to make many of its publications available on the Internet free of charge. Included in this plan are many of the safety publications provided to pilots. The costs of producing and mailing safety publications to pilots will significantly diminish. Consequently, the justification for higher fees based on the length of the medical certificate validity period diminishes as well.

AvCanada: TC sends Collection Agency after me - Post 200, Sat Mar 17, 2007
As I believe that the ASL is about the last publication that is actually mailed out to license holders, perhaps the $55 fee will be cancelled as well... ya, probably not.

Do you have a link to the site? Or is this a proposal and not yet on-line?

I must be a outcast, I read all of them and i have not had one in the mail for the last year or so. If you had read it, you were given a choice a year or so ago to have it online.

It's funny that at the time of writing, 4/2011 isn't online yet. Yet I've had a printed copy for a couple of weeks. Doesn't bode so well for the web-only publication future.

I read all of them, since 1996.

From the notice below, it seems that a print-on-demand version will be available.

It was a joke.

One guy asked where the other guy heard and if it was true, the other guy wrote that he read it in the print version....
