There are no impediments to such activity in Canada.

There have been a number of court cases that have affirmed this, and that have defended the power of the Feds as the only arbiters of the Air.

Presumably, you are talking about landing in an area that supports safe landings and take off of your aircraft.

Common sense would exclude a built up area, simply to avoid the ensuing grief from neighbors that usually follows, whether the activity is legal or not.

I believe there is a federal prohibition on landing and taking off in a built-up area except at an airport (registered? certificated? I'm not sure) but outside of that you're free to do as you please. Presumably you need the landowner's permission, or it would be a trespass.

Thanks for the relies,

I read the part in CAR's about flying over "built-up areas" but don't really understand what the definition of built-up area is?

Town, city, rural properties, farmland?

any clarification? sources?

I see this on a COPA website, under a list of achievements:
Through several meetings, COPA successfully opposed an initiative to define "built-up area", a proposal that would have placed an impossible burden on pilots flying at acceptable minimum altitudes.
TC AIM AGA 2.1 says:
An aerodrome is defined by the Aeronautics Act as:

Any area of land, water (including the frozen surface thereof) or other supporting surface used, designed, prepared, equipped or set apart for use either in whole or in part for the arrival, departure, movement or servicing of aircraft and includes any buildings, installations and equipment situated thereon or associated therewith.

This has a very broad application for Canada where there are no general restrictions preventing landings or takeoffs. There are defined exceptions, but, for the most part, all of Canada can be an aerodrome.
AGA 2.3.2 says
2.3.2 Applicability of Airport Certification

The requirement for airport certification applies to:

(a) any aerodrome that is located within the built-up area of a city or town;
.
.
.
That's my source for saying you can't land in a built up area (except at a certificated airport).
