Vincent Varona was driving southbound on Russ Baker Way when he noticed the plane flying erratically.

“Directly ahead of me in the sky I saw the plane bank really hard to its left, and then immediately to its right, as if it were out of control,” he said.

“It was still going very fast, and at that speed it was lower to the ground than a plane making a normal descent would be, so putting all of these things together, I thought to myself, ‘It’s going to crash.’ “

Now that it has been made public. I can confirm that the captain has succumbed to his injures. This happened approximately 4 hours after the accident. There will be a trust account set up for his wife and young daughter.

The individual, was an amazing man! Genuine, thoughtful, experienced and only ever thought of his wife his daughter and the best interests of others. Truly one of the best human beings I have ever known. In addition he was am exemplary captain and taught others by listening. He will be sorely missed!

Details of the account will be posted here later this afternoon.

My condolences to everyone else who is affected by this unimaginable loss!

To his credit, he did his job and all of his passengers got off the aircraft alive.

We love you and your family. Rest In Peace Friend! :?

How the "ef" do you know that!! What a vile and useless post. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who need them now, not speculating on what we think happened!!
Best wishes, condolences and prayers for speedy recovery to all involved.

It didn't start in the nose - The engines were on fire (AFTER THE CRASH) and the fire rolled up over the cockpit section.

Some pics I've seen of the ripped away tail show the CVR still mounted to the aft bulkhead. That should be a big help. (I assume it's a CVR vs an FDR)

Pilots name has been released........

"The B.C. Coroner Service confirmed this morning that the pilot, 44-year-old Luc Fortin of North Vancouver, died from "thermal" injuries. The co-pilot remains in critical condition with burns to 80 per cent of his body.

Fortin died just after 10 p.m. last night, at Vancouver General Hospital, said coroner Owen Court. An autopsy is currently underway, he said. "The next of kin was present at the time of his death," Court told The Sun Friday morning."

Luc was a great guy, I can still hear his crazy laugh. I worked with him lots in the early years, you could not ask for a nicer guy or a better pilot. The last time I spoke to him was by chance on the radio late one night on a red-eye, he was flying the king air out of yvr going to some arsehole of a place. He was very proud of his new daughter. I kept meaning to call you, I'm sorry that i never did. Thank you for all the good times at Borek, Luc, you were a stand up guy.

Words can not express the sadness I feel over this loss, having a wife and young daughter myself it hits way to close to home. God be with the family and friends of all involved!

I look forward to more info on the trust fund, it is important to support our brothers and sisters in this industry.

Fly safe everyone!

The FO was Matt Robick (sp?), the GM of NTA just mentioned him on CBC.

Lotta young fellas loosing their lives and leaving wives/children behind. I can't recall over my many years such a young group of individuals killed in crashes in such a short time span(YRB and YZF).

Sincere condolances and deepest sympathy to family/friends/co-workers. Very sad to read about accidents(again).
