call sign "PARROT"
I recently had an opportunity to tour a mobile ATC set-up at a military airfield. The controller was showing us his radar screen and I was glancing at the flights in the area and came across "PARROT" at FL 600. Any military types here who can answer as to what type of aircraft that might be? U 2?

You shouldn't be posting that in the public forum, should you?█████ wrote:███ █████ ████ ███ ███ ██ ████ ██ ████ ████████.
Re: call sign "PARROT"
Was it moving slowly in a tight circle? A Parrot is a computer generated target used to verify the alignment of the radar display. IE: if the "Parrot" is in the correct position -radial & DME (it was always at FL600), I can consider the radar correctly aligned. It stands for Position Adjustable Range Reference Orientation Transponder. We displayed it when I was in the military but it is hidden on my civil screen.Switchfoot wrote:I recently had an opportunity to tour a mobile ATC set-up at a military airfield. Why is it that most of your posts are blacked out? As is your username and location... I didn't even know that was possible.█████ wrote:███ █████ ████ ███ ███ ██ ████ ██ ████ ████████.

+1 I can see them on NARDS when I zoom the display out. All at FL600 and share the same code (can't remember off hand). I was on a trip with a tech to one of the radar sites where he explained how they use the Parrot in maintaining the integrity of the Secondary Surveillance Radar. We then went to the Parrot site, looks like a small transmitter tower in line of sight with the radar.kevenv wrote:Was it moving slowly in a tight circle? Not the coolest military call sign if it was.
ATC - "Parrot234, sqwak ident"
Parrot - "Sqwwwwaaaakkinng."
ATC - "Parrot234, sqwak ident"
Parrot - "Sqwwwwaaaakkinng."
Kowalski: Sir, we may be out of fuel.
Skipper: What makes you think that?
Kowalski: We've lost engine one, and engine two is no longer on fire.

Boy that story changes all the time. Last I heard it was a watermelon and 3 or 4 Tibetan yaks.
