Guess you're not up here for the weekend then, eh? That sucks 'cause I expected you to buy me beer after that crack about my bike.

Well I brought you up 2 R-2800 cylinders for your lamps, or what ever you are making. They are in the hanger all boxed up.

Thompson, ah lived there forr 25 years, it is like most northerly place, cold, expensive and no real good road out. But a time for building a great life, great friendships, and there is a lot of serious and fun things. Yes there are problems-many-but, if you can work past them and look at it from the fact the liquor store is in the main part of town and the homeless shelter is there also and the friendship centre is also there. good garbage bins for sleeping in trees, then go over to the new end and find beautiful homes, nice mobile home park, or paint lake, only living at the lake your vechicle gets a lot of kilometers on it and it is quite a drive in the winter. The lake is beautiful, and fishing is great and it is growing. The friendships you make in Thompson will go with you always, I never had a problem with the hospital, clinic or anything while I was up there, but must admit, I really don't miss it. I do miss the people and the church, but not the lack of shopping or being 8 hours of driving to Winnipeg. Good Luck

Thank you. We are leaning towards Paint and Liz Lakes at this point but will wait until we are actually there and see places in person. There aren't many homes for sale to choose from right now.

I decided to take the supermoto and have it switched to the dirt setup. I'll probably have to stud the tires because I heard there's snow in Thompson already. I am wearing shorts here in NB today and am heading out for a bicycle ride. I have to make the most of this sunny weekend.

I'll be in Thompson around Nov. 15 and look forward to making those new friendships you speak of. Cheers :smt023

It's not that bad if you just stay out of trouble and watch your back...but that's something required in any city.

I am definitely going to make the most of my time in Thompson. Its going to be an adventure driving from NB to MB with 2 kids and 2 dogs (one dog often gets car sick). I am looking forward to seeing our country. Thanks for all the replies, information, and advice.

One thought just occurred to me, if I remember correctly, the first good place to stop and get fuel was Ashern. There is another place a short distance later, then, nothing until Grand Rapids. From Grand Rapids to Thompson, the only place for fuel on the Highway is Ponton. Depending on the weather, I generally stopped for fuel in Ashern, then Grand Rapids and if the roads and or weather was bad I would also stop at Ponton. I believe it's about 90 mins to Ashern from the perimeter highway at Winnipeg, then 3 hrs to Grand rapids, then 2 hours to Ponton and about 1 hr from there to Thompson. It's very possible to have -20 or colder in mid Novemeber so bring some survival type stuff, ie; blankets and candles.

Thompson is amazing after three months straight spend in Lynn Lake. Real stores wow! It feels like a metropolis. Civilization at last!

Lived/worked in CYTH '87-'94, it was good for us but we left when the daughter got school age. On the way through, stop in at CYWG FIC for a tour and a coffee.

Living out at Paint Lake is the ONLY way to have a decent life in that dumphole of a town. Especially if you have kids. Spent a lot of time in Northern communities from NWT, northern Sask, MB and ON and compared to Thompson they were like paradise. Thompson still ranks as the #1 shithole in Canada.

There are worse places than Thompson. The only problem with Paint Lake is its a long drive back and forth everyday. If your kids are involved in any sporting activities you may have to drive back and forth more than once a day. During the summer it would be awesome out there, I used to get a seasonal campsite there once and awhile. But during the 7 months of winter it will be a lonely cold place. Friends will be less likely to come out for a visit in the winter as well. Whatever works best for you though, obviously silverstar had a negative experience up there, but as you can see there are allot of positive experiences as well.

Nope. Spent a lot of time in The Pas, never minded it. Lived in a lot of northern places people would call shitholes but the only one that ever actually was a genuine, certified, grade A, dumphole was Thompson.
