Alkan Air - First Officers

Post by The Old Fogducker »

Just a comment to anyone contemplating applying for an F/O position in Whitehorse, let me tell you that the almost 3 years I spent flying from Whitehorse in my late 20's were by far among the best in my 40 years of aviation, and I encourage people to apply. Wonderful area, friendly people, and stunning outdoors.

I still entertain the fantasy of flying there for one or two summers to finish off my career before hanging up my headset and going on the after dinner speaking tour.

40 years and still not ready to retire ? How many ex-wives are you paying for ? :D Never worked in YXY but have stayed many times and I would have to agree that for a northernish town it is like a little Vantopia north but with nicer summers, winters and no traffic.

Axial ... I'm one of the very, very lucky ones that doesn't consider what I do to be "work." Challenging, sometimes frustrating, sometimes exceptionaly rewarding, and now financially rewarding based upon the mix of my life's experiences.

No ex-wives to support .... emphasis on "support" so I'm not in the position of some who now find themselves trying to find a new honey on a half of a half of a pension cheque.

Back on topic, Whitehorse is one heck of a town, and the area is wonderful. After about 5 years in Vancouver, I found the weather to be a lot milder in Whitehorse than I had expected by looking at it on the map. Really, really cold from time to time? You bet.

Agreed. Whitehorse is a great town.

Horrible for housing at this point, hopefully that gets sorted out in the near future.

I would agree with you as well Fogducker Whitehorse is a great place. I spent some time there early in my career 1971, I took my wife there for our honeymoon and still have the same one after all these years in aviation. With 42 years in the industry I'm semi retired on the Island, but haven't totally hung up the David Clarkes yet.

Fog, I hear ya, I miss the north as well. Apparently I have family there. Decades ago my cousins went there for a summer and ended up staying. They now own the airport chalet and bar - Never met them but plan to one day. I gave serious consideration to leaving Jazz and applying to Alkan or Air North back 6 years ago. From what I hear it's one hell of a place.

KAG:

When I first went to YXY, I lived in the apartments behind the Airport Chalet for about 10 months, and because it was so close, used to eat at the Chalet regularly.

It was the haunt for all aviation folks after work time ended. The lunch specials were always popular too.

Called earlier and the receptionist stated they were going through resumes this week and early the next. Calls to follow after that.

IIRC I just called the main number on their website.

If you changed your contact information, I feel this would best be done via e-mail with a subject similar to: Pilot Application Update *** New Address and Phone Number ***.

thank you Louis for your reply.

Mind asking what kind of experience do you have ? For me ,I only have 925 hrs of tt and most of them coming from instructing. I actually don't know how much it can do to my application.

Still i am looking forward to the opportunity, getting a job in Canada is much harder than expected.
