Headsets

Post by AZN 027 »

Does anybody know where I can buy some cheap headsets in Canada?

I was lookin particularly at the 13.4 model.

Also, I have found that certain types of sunglasses break the seal of a good headset and allow some sound to enter. Does anybody have any ideas how to combat this?

David Clark sell a little foam pad that you slide onto the arms of your sunglasses that help keep the ear seal tight. The 13.4 are a nice headset but don't discount some of the other brands out there. I tried Softcom years ago and found them to be just as good as the "green beans" and a heck of a lot cheaper!

is it for you? I am geeting the feeling it is not. However if it is, don't cheap out on your ears. Get the best.

not that it may matter to you, however for other's reading this post, I stumbled across this company called http://www.headsetsinc.com/ they are noise canceling . You can either buy the whole headset for like 500$ or buy the noise canceling unit to install into you 'green beans' for a fraction of the price.

I have used the whole headset and can tell you......They are excellent.

DC goes for like 1200$ I believe and I could not tell the difference between the two. And it's made out of tough material and is light and has the same cosmetic look as the DC.

David Clark sells a new gel seal that is undercut and almost twice as thick for more comfort and better sealing while wearing eyeglasses. I don't have these but I looked at someone elses and they seem way better than there old gel seals and of course they cost more.

The Lightspeed ANR headsets have very thick foam pads and are very comforable even with glasses. Newer gel seals for D/C style are about $40 and work pretty well with glasses too.

I've had this problem for years. All glasses interfere with the noise reduction of headsets. The bigger the arms on your glasses, the more the problem. I think it was Ray Ban who made frames specifically for this, that were flat shaped to minimise this effect.

I can't imagine how uncomfortable those revenge of the nerds horned glasses with the big plastic frames that were cool a couple of years ago must feel wedged into a pair of 13.4's. The cost of coolness eh? cj

The link you provided goes nowhere - who is this company?
I am looking to get some ANC for my old DCs.
As for the glasses, I always look for the ones with the thinest arm; it doesn't make it perfect but as someone else said, the thinner the better.

We can sell you a H10-13.4 for $475.00. We could have been a dealer for ANY headset, but as noted above, DC is THE BEST! If, on the off chance you actually need to use their warranty, you will be blown away with their service.
As for the retrofit ENC kit, they do work, but they void the warranty. As with most things in aviation, and life, you get what you pay for.

What do you mean what? The headsets sold on that website are noise cancelling headsets. Self evident no?

Do not buy those ANR kits which install into older headsets! They suck. I bought one a month ago and had it professionally installed. When the ANR was on, it was only as quiet as a normal DC 13.4. When the ANR was off, it was 3x as loud. Seriously. My advice, buy a real ANR headset. For the cost of the kit and a pair of 13.4's, you could almost get a Bose X. I'm taking the kit out and putting the old speakers back in.

DC 13.4's on sale at calgary pilot supplie a couple of weeks ago for 385.00.

Bose headsets suck. They are garbage, built very cheaply.

I personally hate ANR headsets, I like to hear what is going on around me. At one with the aircraft.

I've used the Sennheiser ANC and the Bose X. I'm not sure if I buy that you can't hear what's going on with the engines with ANC - the cirrus and commander 114b are plenty loud, and you can definetely still hear what's going on. The Bose are nice, but they are a little flimsy (all plastic), and once your batteries die - it's freakin' loud! When they work, they reduce the drone nicely.

Though, for my budget, my 13.4's do the job just fine, glasses and all.

I added the headsets inc. kit to my DC H10-60s in 2001.

Now i know the 10-60 is not the most common set but they work great. Lots of fling-wing guys use them in their helmets.

My only complaint is in the Beaver the ANR crackles on take-off, I just got in the habit of turning the ANR on after climb power was set. Yes T/O is where you need ANR but for the difference in price, the mod is a good option.

As for the set being louder without the ANR on, it doesnt make a difference. In fact I dont use the ANR in the cessna. I had the ANR cable mounted into the green dome with a screw jack plug, just unplug the battery and you have one less cord to deal with.
