Hard Landing In YTH......

Post by fred_fredericks »

Talked to a pax this am about how hard they landed :( in Thompson yesterday with the big green machine. Looks like they rushed it into the hangar right after for sugery or mabey an inspection. Pax said only minor bumps to the people on board witch is good. Any more news on this???

I love it!!

A very reputable company in YYC did a similar thing in a 'Ho a while back...swept it under the carpet so fast that the news didn't even make it on AvCanada!!

Yes I remember that one...heard the navajo's spar was bent, flat tires, and busted rims..... isnt it funny how some companys can do things like that and no one ever knows....yet others get slamed here all the time.

To the experienced people out there, not the know it alls, i have a question...
These types of incidents have happened before, we've all heard of them, but is the subsequent damage from this progressive, ie. would this one hard landing be the staw that broke the camels back, or can that much damage occur to a perfectly healthy airplane from one hard landing... It seems to me that if it (the resulting damage) was as bad as I've heard, that the gear would have broken off first, I know Metro fuel bladders are subject to cracking like that, but can someone fill me in?

Probably too many variables to consider. Having not seen the damage, things to consider is the landing itself, temperature (metal reacts differently hot or cold) and any prior wear or tear. There is a clip on the net showing a test flight where a tail separates from eiher an md83 or fokker...something like that. :?:

To cause a fuel leak in a metro, Imho. Unless its a real, real hard landing its most likely NOT just one bad landing that does it.
There are NO rubber bladders in the metro, just tight rivets and PRC.
If you wont to see if its a hard landing look for wrinkles in the skin around the engine and in the wheel wells. IF its bad you might see some bending.

umm
Here for the grace of god go I. or something like that.

This type of thing happens daily lots of time maintenance doesn't even find out  witch is bad because of the major stresses to the airframe there's a reason that aircraft manufactures have inspection to complete after something like this happens. It often doesn't have anything to do with the company rep but the rep of the crew and if they report what has happened so it can be delt with. It would be pretty bad to wipe out the next landing cause something was really wrong and you didn't want to report what happend, for whatever reasons, pride or fear of prosecution by your CP/OPS Mger :x .

One must remember what could cause this landing short, wind sheer, stalling on landing, being over wheight or leaving with grossed out plane and having to return for whatever reason before burning of your fuel for the on route.

Just glad that no one got hurt!! :) Allthought the world must be starting to run low on metro's.

Actually they didn't "sweep it under the carpet." Lots of people knew about it; inside the company and out, but apparently none of us chose to share the information.

'Hyster', I've been asking that question for years! I've never understood how company 'A' has an incident and it's all over our industry the same day yet company 'B' has the same incident and nobody ever hears about it.

Who knows?!

Maybe 'shitdisturber' is on to something. He said "none of us chose to share the information [with the 'outside']"...perhaps a sign of a good company with loyal employees? As a pilot, why WOULD you want to let the world know that your company had an 'issue'?!?!

I've never understood why gossip spreads so fast in our industry.

hyster, the reason is that some companies truly think they are better than everyone else and that when they screw up its nothing but if another company screws up they just think they are that much better. take sunwest and the ho,perfect example.

StringBender... You must be reffering to the Airco crash of their HO in Rainbow Lake a few years ago, Or were you talking about Borek's 200 in Hamburg that lost a wing ..Or maybe it was the Alta 402 that overran the runway in Slave Lake and later in Jasper...Air Spray's A26 in Grande Prairie?? or was it ACA's 100 in QU? Better yet, I bet you were recalling Slave Air's 90 that had a mishap onto the frozen lake. Was it Accent's 310 that triggered your brain to make such a deep post? Or was it the "close shave" of one of Robby's king air 100's in Grande Cache? My point is that EVERY company has incidents and even accidents that they "sweep" under the rug. Calling out Sunwest because they did not air their soiled shorts in public is irrational.

Heard today that she is written off.......

The FSS guys say that they took a 20 knot quartering tailwind, floated down the runway at about 10-15' then they say she just fell out of the sky. At this point it was well past the half way point of the wonderfully shortened YTH runway.

I wouldn't take your friends' stories as gospel... and define a 'write-off'.... until you see a chop-saw being taken to the aircraft, nothing is ever finished at PAG!!!

Interesting to hear what's floating around the hangars though!

2 things,
Like Merlinman said
Its not done until the wings come off....with a saw.

And I think alot of you would be a bit surprised at how many hard landings there are in a day, month and year. Especially on metros.

have fun everyone.

There is no such thing as a "normal" landing in a turbo dildo. There are just varying degrees of hard landings. If the skins are wrinkled, she is pretty well a write off because they are usually worth more as parts than as a whole airplane. Leaking fuel? the only time a Metro does NOT leak fuel is when the fuel tanks are empty, and even then there is a seep.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.
