2nd the vote for the Phillips. We ran several engines through TBO without any oil related issues, consumption stayed lower too from when we ran the W100 previuosly.

Never used the phillips in the beaver, its been w100 and w80 for winter for us
Re: Multi grade oil or W-100 oil in the Beaver
W100 is the way to go to preserve engine life, but only if you run the engine properly. Warm up is the key. You need to warm the oil to the temp at which it tends to run at. The beavers I flew typically ran around 65 degrees C. I therefore warmed the engines up to 65 degrees for takeoff so that there was no temperature change and oil pressured remained within limits at takeoff. In the very hot months I would recommend even W120.

This is a polarizing topic. We've also run several engines to tbo with the multi grade and had positive results as mentioned above. I don't like the warm up characteristics of of the 100 in the summer or the winter.
I think the 100 is oldschool, modern multiweight oils are great.

another vote for the 25/60... our overhauls tend to agree

the beavers that we work on, we use phillips 25w60 and a can of avblend
Re: Multi grade oil or W-100 oil in the Beaver
Oil has always been a mysterious and polarizing subject. I would suggest calling one of the few overhaul shops for PW engines and get their opinion. I have been told by a reputable overhaul shop to run Philips oil. Apparently, on the 180/185 engines, Aeroshell will cause excessive corrosion and reduce engine life. I have always followed the advice of these overhaul shops. They have seen it all and can recommend the proper oil for the type of operation you are doing.

+1 for Multi-Grade. Our Beaver Engine is coming on TBO and still running strong.
Re: Multi grade oil or W-100 oil in the Beaver
Pretty individual sort of thing, depends on engine overhaul and to what standard as to how your engine runs to TBO. Before multi grade stuff became trendy used to just run 100 then 120 in hotter (30C+) weather. Engines went to TBO no worries at all. That was on AG work, Take off with full power (If altittude permitted) every 4 to 8 minutes, the whole engine life. With ferry flights on cruise mebe up to an hour a day. Most engines run well over a TBO of 1400. Warm up and engine handling as important as oil I recon.rubberduck wrote:+1 for Multi-Grade. Our Beaver Engine is coming on TBO and still running strong.

If it's a crap cheap overhaul you will have trouble even if you warm it up and use super dooper oil Bobbybeaverbob wrote: Just warm the damn thing up and don't over heat or over cool. Bob

Phillips = Sticky valves for some reason? Nothing a rubber hammer can't fix. Pretty common to throw a thing of Mystery Oil in with the oil at the 100hr. Not sure it does any good however.

Watched an otter at our dock with sticky valves, overhaul shop said to put mystery oil in with the fuel and oil.Said it would cure up in 5 minutes, took less than that and they have been using ever since.I have used 100,120,shell and Philips multi...it all works!Jyust warm the damn thing up and
slow throttle applacations.Don't let the prop drive the engine on final

An engine pre-oiler would go a long way in reducing wear and tear during start up, especially in a machine that is not in use everyday.
Anyone have any experience with that?
