Buzz jobs
WTF are people thinking when they go about doing s*^t like this as the pilot or the camera man??
http://video.ca.msn.com/watch/video/clo ... a-infopane
Then there are headlines such as "Cameraman has nerves of steel to not flinch"
I would say more like "brains of rock"

Re: Buzz jobs
What they don't tell you is that the cameraman is standing on the deck of the control tower at the air to ground gunnery range where the video was filmed. It's not nearly as heroic or brainless as you might think.
Re: Buzz jobs
That looked like a pretty controlled situation. Still.....I'd have had to go home and change....

Re: Buzz jobs
You've probably never heard of Larry Salganek, but
he teaches people to fly interesting airplanes in New
Mexico.
If you go there for flight training, he will teach you
some interesting things. For example, he might be
sitting there, bouncing a ball on the floor, and then
without warning bounce it to over to you, and you
catch it.
Larry would ask you, "Nice catch. Do you think you
could do that 100 times in a row?" If you were honest,
you would probably say "No".
Larry would reply, "Then don't do anything in a warbird
that you can't do perfectly 100 times in a row".

Doc: is that honestly what you took away from that?Probably has an ego the size of the Titanic!
Larry trains people to fly (and issues type ratings on)
the MiG-15, MiG-17, L29, L39, T-33, Fouga Magister,
etc and has for many years. Given that he is still alive,
the Law of Averages tells us that he has a clue.
I'm disappointed that you think that there is nothing
anyone here could learn from him - only that he should
be hated and envied.

Re: Buzz jobs
i kind of got that feeling especially with spins on a hot day which in my case work perfectly for me probably 99 times out of a 100 but that 100'th one seems to rotate a bit more, sag on entry a bit more etc. and therefore doing them down low with no margin carries a 1 in 100 chance of a crash.
Problem is you need to do 1000's of them in different conditions to know what the odds are.
So basically many years of practice day in day out all different weather conditions before mucking about down low.

Re: Buzz jobs
Coincidentally, wasn't that NASA's safety record on the Space Shuttle?doing them down low with no margin carries a 1 in 100 chance of a crash
Every 1/100 flights ended up in a ball of flame and total fatalities?
Clearly, no one has anything to learn here.
Do you think Bryan Jenson could recover from a low-altitude
tumble, 100 out of 100 times?
Yup, nothing to learn here.

Re: Buzz jobs
Mea culpa. That's a horrible safety record. That's1 in 68
a 1.5% probability of complete destruction, fatal
to everyone on board.

You people have a hard time with humour don't you. I'd bloody love a few hours in any or all of the above. Anybody at the top of their field (this guy obviously is) has a wee bit of an ego. Without one, they wouldn't be able to function. BTW, I'll take the MIG 15. The thing is loaded with history. I have flown a Vampire, BTW. Also, a Chipmunk, Yale and a Harvard. Still planning a motorcycle trip to go fly with Hedley.Colonel Sanders wrote:Doc: is that honestly what you took away from that?Probably has an ego the size of the Titanic!

In a situation like this, should the pilot be the only one held accountable?Oldfartus wrote:http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatche ... -1201.html

Re: Buzz jobs
Well, the article points out that these guys were both friends. They obviously planned to film this close in fly-by for fun beforehand. Although, as I am sure someone will point out, the responsibility ultimately falls on the pilot, the friend had something to do with the decision making. He was also a licensed pilots, so he should have been aware of the inherent danger; it wasn't like he was an innocent bystander.North Shore wrote:^ Well, who else should be?
I just find it odd that the mother wants a longer jail time, even though they both were part of this plan, which could be argued as a rather stupid idea and very poor decision making.

Re: Buzz jobs
Bleach put himself there. He knew the risks, and yet he still put himself into that situation.
Now, even though her son made a mistake as well and was part of this whole plan to film the low-fly-by, Bleach's mother STILL wants Butterfield punished further. Does that not sound wrong?

As trained pilots, both Butterfield and Bleach should have known the risks and the possible bad outcomes, as the judge pointed out. Butterfield was charged with "dangerous operation of an aircraft

Re: Buzz jobs
A debate can be made for both sides but ultimately the pilot is liable when there is an accident like this.
Re: Buzz jobs
This is the first thing I thought when I read the thread title. Bill's death still hurts. I feel sorry for the pilot, his family, Bill's family and everyone involved in their lives.Oldfartus wrote:http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatche ... -1201.html

Cant do that anymore doc. rumor has it he lost the medical when he went into the hospital for the name change operation. So now, dont go look for him in the hangar anymore, instead, head over to the cafetria at the airport, he's serving up greasy fried chicken these days, gone are the days of thrilling rides in the pitts....Doc wrote: Still planning a motorcycle trip to go fly with Hedley.

Re: Buzz jobs
I cant believe that you guys could fall for such a fake video. Look at the plane just before it passes by, total fake!!
If a pilot walked into a forest and had to make a decision, and no one from AVCANADA was there. Would the pilot still be wrong?
