Big question... I know guys who probably have $25,000 sitting in their rollcab, and I know guys who would be luckly to get $1000 for their collection. First, decide what kind of basic tools would you need. Also depends on what aircraft you are working on. If you work on HS-748s, that Snap-On 1/4" BS wrench will save the day over and over again. However, if you are working on 737NGs, a 1/4" BS wrench will be about as useful as a snowblower in Jamaica.
I'd say for a young guy starting out maybe $1000 ish or so should get you everything you absolutely "need", and then you can start to build up your collection with the "I want that", "these are nice" and "That would be nice to have" tools later on as time, money and sales permit. One good piece of advise though is, if you are going the used route, look for that old guy from about the Triassic period who's been everywhere and seen everything. The tools in his box probably won't be in as good shape, but it'l be full of home made, specially modified, secret weapons that nobody ever thought of that'l make some of those damn near impossible jobs a walk in the park.
