PW100 Main Bearing Seals Question
We are AME students doing a project on the PW100 engine and are stuck on the type of seals used on the main bearings in the engine. The number 1,2,3,4,5,6, and 7 bearings. The book we have is a training book and only shows the location of the bearings but no info on the seals. If anybody has experience on this engine that would like to help some future AME's, would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Re: PW100 Main Bearing Seals Question
Hey BOSSHOSS.
As for your question, Bearings 1,2,7 support the PT shaft, Bearings 3&6 support the LP shaft and Bearings 4&5 support the HP shaft.
They all use Labarinth seals, the seals are pressurized with P3 air during start until about 40-45%NH and then the air source changes to P2.5. If there is a failure of the switching for the air there will be white smoke from the exhaust on start and shut down if it is stuck on P2.5 and if it is stuck on P3 there will be a mist or oil smell in the cabin.
I hope this helps.
