Re: Idiots of the year......................
Those bastards should be thrown in jail!! The very idea of commencing a take off with some snow sitting on the wings. It gets worse. I recently saw a plane take off from a strip that was not paved and had snow resting on it. How can you safely compute a take off roll from a strip like that. How about ASD? To further increase the problem, the de-ice boots were rough, the paint was in poor shape on the wings and the props had some scratches on them. Now what is his VMC if he loses an engine? I glanced at his W&B and noticed he was using standard weights and there was some fat bastards getting on that flight. This bullshit has got to stop!!! Sorry but I'm a little busy right now as I'm heavily involved in a sick out in a collapsing airline. Be back later when I'm treated with more consideration. Later Dudes.

Probably was cold soaked, if the plane and the atmosphere are atthe same temp and below zero, an falling snow wont stick and will just blow off as was demonstrated in that video. It works probably 99 times out of 100. heres the 100th time:

The company representatives have again named ground icing of the aircraft's wing and stabiliser as the main cause of the accident.
De-icing from now on will be mandatory for all aircraft of the UTair airline.

You got that right azimuth!! I posted yesterday the link on the ATR crash and it sure made me sick watching this one today!! I don't know how these guys got away with this s**t but this would easily count for criminal negligence!
Unless Aeroflot pilots are forgetting that they are not flying exclusively Tupolev's and Sukhoi's - but a modern mix fleet of western build jetliners that are not made of tank skin with a hammer and sickle on their tails!!

I wonder if the poster (Uploaded by svoavia on Jan 5, 2012) has any clue why the take off video has 162,000 Views and the landing only 265 http://youtu.be/nr5BA62hJ74
oops just google translated the captions "Rise from the Sheremetyevo with ' dirty ' wings" so they knew it wasn't right

Re: Idiots of the year......................
I can't figure out if this is sarcastic or not. I just completed a takeoff on some snow that didn't have a strip under it at all. I didn't bother to calculate takeoff distance at all, let alone ASD.NWONT wrote:Those bastards should be thrown in jail!! The very idea of commencing a take off with some snow sitting on the wings. Re: Idiots of the year......................
I guess in Russia answer "B" must be right on their annual airframe icing exam: Contamination will (or might) blow off during the takeoff roll.
Two things immediately come to mind when I watched that video:
1. That more than likely wasn't some random event...it probably happens more than I care to think about.
2. It's sickening to hear the little kid voices in the background...completely unaware of what was going on.
Maybe they use Vodka to deice over there and just wanted to save it for later

Wonder what those poor engines looked like inside after that
Re: Idiots of the year......................
It is a different mentality altogether. They went to war in 44-45 with a riffle for 3 or 4 soldiers. They grabbed the riffle from the dead, and forged ahead. They definitely have a different view of the world.Lost Lake wrote:The Ruskies don't need ice for accidents. Just check their flying record in bad weather in balmy africa.

Yep! UTair does all the dirty work, even here in Af!

They went to war from 41-45 that way, though towards the end it wasn't as bad with production of weapons catching up. You're right, they definitely do have a different view of the world. Its a bit easier to understand why they do what they do when one has studied their history.Expat wrote: It is a different mentality altogether. Especially when your sources are not the western history books. A lot of things will be clearer.

Re: Idiots of the year......................
Well interacting with Russians has also been very interesting. The funny thing is that Russians in many ways are very much alike Americans. You can't help but wonder if most of the cold war could have been avoided if both sides could really have ahd a good sit down talk. Though maybe not, a cultural trait of both is an excessive bull headedness, which has sometimes been one of their great strengths and other times great folly.
Re: Idiots of the year......................
AN-24? This is actually normal for this airplane, it was designed for operation from dirt and mud fields for far north and Siberia. And has been doing it for the last 40 years. And it is in its POH. As you see it is still flying.
The problem is they don't have a new airplane to replace it with unless you know of another one capable of this kind of daily service. Without it those remote places are kind of gone.
Re: Idiots of the year......................
If you look superficially - yes. But if you explore why the whole thing came about and what led to it - likely to be not such a straight answer. I personally really have fun watching it from both cultural perspectives. And have one thing to say - the less you know the simpler and more "proper" the world is. Far easier to live in as the result.Shiny Side Up wrote:Well interacting with Russians has also been very interesting. The funny thing is that Russians in many ways are very much alike Americans. Thank you all knowing Antonov man. Not the kind of flying I would do - that's all.akoch wrote:AN-24? Re: Idiots of the year......................
You're welcome. Hope I deserved the slap. IMHO your disapproval should better be directed to the folks who actually fly those routes daily if you feel you have some moral or professional superiority.
Re: Idiots of the year......................
Don't let it bother you akoch. The attitude of many on this site is if they haven't personally done it, well then it just shouldn't be done. Many here would turn down a flight if there is one single snowflake on the wings and the runway isn't bare and dry and wiped with a hanky. You're dealing with people that think Northern Ontario is Barrie and Sudbury is the Arctic. I just wonder how much real flying Fotoflyer has done or has it all been through the lens of his camera.

Don't let some of these posters get to you akoch, ignorance may have something to do with their opinions.

Thanks guys, appreciate you saying this. As we all get older (and wiser?) the skin gets thicker. Still possible to get excited about things

Re: Idiots of the year......................
For the record I have been at this for 20 years. And yes, I have done lots of "real" flying all over this and other continents. No desire to go back to the bad old days, that's all.NWONT wrote:Don't let it bother you akoch.
