I think some of this is incorrect. There is no reason that multiple people can't have multiple insurance policies on the same aircraft. Just because Policy A covers pilot A and not pilot B, doesn't mean that pilot B is not allowed to have another policy which covers himself and the aircraft while he is piloting. The presence of another name in the logbook does not void an insurance policy. I doubt it says anywhere in your insurance agreement that no other person is allowed to fly the aircraft ever, just that pilots other than those listed in the policy are not covered by that policy.Wilbur wrote: If your friend's insurance policy does not cover you, his policy will be void for that flight, and possibly every subsequent flight. Your name in the log book as PIC is documented proof of the owner breaching the terms and conditions of his coverage, which probably voids the policy. If it doesn't entirely void the policy, it would certainly provide grounds for the insurance company to deny coverage if the owner and you (or any other pilot) were involved a mishap at some future time.

This answer to this question seems to revolve around insurance. Why don't you just call the insurance company and ask how much it would cost to be added to the policy? You might be surprised, I was.
Last fall I added a friend of mine (yes...a VERY GOOD friend) to the insurance on my Mooney. Note that I am a 900 hour MIFR pilot with 750+ hours in my Mooney. My friend is a 160 hour pilot, all in C-172s, with no additional ratings and 0 time logged in the past year. Total cost to add him for the rest of the year (10 months)...$200. There is a 10 hour dual requirement and a sign off from an instructor for him to fly solo but having me fly the "dual" with him (I am not an instructor) was discussed as a possibility if he had problems finding an instructor.
Compared to the other costs of flying, $200 is a rounding error.

I think that, given the fact that the owner will be flying right there along side me, since he's fine with me logging PIC that I'll just go ahead and do it. He'll just put me in as pax for the JL. Who the heck is going to check my personal logbook against the journey log of one private plane for 10 hours worth of flying?? That's just splitting hairs IMO. Laws are there for a reason but insurance is corporate policy, not law.

Come on Cat, you must remember what it was like to get your first log book and be all excited when there was a possible chance to make an entry. He'll get over it soon enough.

If you're PIC then your name goes in the journey log.800man wrote:I think that, given the fact that the owner will be flying right there along side me, since he's fine with me logging PIC that I'll just go ahead and do it. 800man, do you just fly recreationally or do you have plans to earn a living with your licence?
