Question for the aviation professionals

Post by FlyFlyAway »

Hi,

My son recently received a call for an Air Canada medical examination for a position as a pilot. He had his interview a few weeks before that. He told me this was because he had a successful interview and he is one step closer to getting the job. Is this true? I thought that completing a medical would be a normal part of the airline interview process. Why would they not do it the same day? I told him I didn't think it was anything to get excited about just yet. Didn't want him to count his chickens before they hatch, as we used to say. He always talks about this forum so I figured I would ask here. Hope he doesn't get mad at me.

It is true, it's a good sign - but not a guarantee...

I'm not an "insider" but here is what I understand of the process...

The medical is done after a possibly successful interview/application. They don't waste the time/money doing it on someone they wouldn't hire. The only time you may see it done same day is if an interviewee is brought in from out of country.

He will be assigned a "score" based on his interview, references and application/experience/education/language type factors and graded against the other candidates that are in a similar phase of the process. Top scores get hired for the next course. Applicants remain in the pool until they get pushed out the bottom by higher scoring individuals. Word is 30 people will be hired per month for at least the rest of the year - of course subject to who knows what... Good luck to him!

I thought that once you do the medical, you are hired, provided you pass the medical.

I would think so but if they don't like your medical results they will send out a PFO but not say the reason for rejection was.

Not necessarily true. If your medical shows your liver is pickled, maybe that would be a quick PFO. But lots of guys in great health get PFO'd after the medical.

If AC wants you and your deficient in a medical area they work with you to get you where you need to be. Lots of guys who have had issues get hired...
