Wanted: Airmanship Case Studies

Post by MAFer »

For my research, I am looking for real-life stories or case studies that hightlight the use of pilot skill and experience to get them out of or through a situation. Does anyone know a website or other printed resource where this material can be found?

TSB is a great site. http://www.tsb.gc.ca

Otherwise you can order the safety letter from T.C.

Tony Kern's book "Redefining Airmanship" is pretty interesting. He outlines different aspects of Airmanship using some case studies. His book should be available for 40 dollars or so.

Cheers!

There was a girl a year or two ago doing a similar case study. It would certainly be in the archives if you wanted to search around for it. It might help you if you saw what format she did the whole thing in. She may have even had contact details, if you're interested.

Yes, the TC Safety Letter is a great source for cases you seek. Not sure if they're accessible in Canada but also check out the "ASRS Callback" brochure that Nasa sends out for all those that are familiar with Nasa reports in the US.

Yes, I have both of Kern's books and I am heavily referencing them. Kern uses a lot of good case studies from the military and I am looking for good airmanship stories/examples from general aviation. I have already looked at Transport Canada's two aviation letters (Reflexion and the Aviation Safety Letter) and are mostly talking about accidents. I would like to have stories where "superior" experience and skill were applied to handle a situation. Do you think that anything like this exists in the aviation world?

MAFer,

Those ASRS Callback newsletters contain actual scenarios of pilots overcoming interesting and potentially dangerous situations. You might want to check if they're available online. In the US they are a free subscription. Maybe it is possible to have them mailed to Canada as well considering there are several Canadian pilots with FAA licenses as well.

That's the link for the ASRS callback letters, they are available online for free, and are really interesting.

The CF's "Flight Comment" magazine can be found here, as well as other interesting flight safety stuff. Look for the "good show" and "for professionalism" award stories.

I purchased Kern's books "Flight Discipline" and "Redefining Airmanship" online with Chapters and it was far less than the $40 aforementioned.

Most of the links that have been recommended are for military ops or for accidents and incidents. I am still looking for GA stories about "using your superior skill and experience" to get out of a situation. Do you have any stories?

MAFer,

In most cases, Good Airmanship and Superior Experience and Skill, keep pilots out of situations that require the aforementioned. In most cases where I came through a "Situation", it started with pour airmanship and I came throught it because of more luck than skill.

Reading accident reports and disaster reviews can sometimes demonstrate what you seek. Sometimes the accident being reported was a lot less tragic or horrific because the crew had experience, disipline, and skill. I'm sure people on this site can recall many such reports and direct you too them with a short explanation of the relevance.

Stories eh? Did you have a look at Duke Elegant's tales in here?

They can be found in the "AvCanada's Wall" forum. Surely there'd be something of the kind you're looking for in there?

MAFer,

I just got the latest "ASRS Callback" on Fri in the mail. Every time NASA issues one they have a theme for the topics/stories included and on this edition the theme was about "Award Winning Performances" which got pilots/crews out of situations.

Look for it online and if you can't find it, PM me your email, I'll scan and emai you a copy of it if you wish.
