Cathay Pacific - second officer interview YVR

Post by skylark172 »

Cathay has started sending out invitations for their second officer programme

I was wondering if anyone who has gone through the process can share what the initial interview is like.

They say it consists of

Interview with both Personal and Technical Questions (45mins)-
Technical multiple-choice Questionnaire (45mins)-
Abstract Reasoning Test (45mins)

Should I be purchasing the schematics of a 747? :D Abstract? I am going to have solve a rubics cube problem? I heard they can ask pretty in depth and difficult questions.

Info would be much appreciated

There is a 215 page thread explaining everything on PPrune. However it looks like this program might not be that great a deal. Also got the call to go to Vancouver. However I will be thinking it over quite thoroughly before accepting. (leaning towards not right now)

From my understanding, the questions are directed towards a Frozen ATPL graduate from the JAA/CAA program. I could be out to lunch, but your best bet is to start studying the JAA ATPL materials. Not sure how much you can get done in 2 weeks, but I think the intent of applying should mean that you feel you are qualified for the Second Officer programme. Look at it this way, you're being hired to be a co-pilot and captain one day. There is a lot to learn in the process frpm the S/O to the F/O seat, but certain elements needs to already be known. I would definitely not walk into that interview room thinking that your Canadian CPL prep theory has you ready for their questions. Below are the list of questions that I have from them, could be out dated.

If I'm wrong, then somebody will surely correct me pretty soon! 8)

Interview Profile
Direct Entry First Officer

• You will be flown to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific for the interview

• You will be responsible for getting yourself to a city served by CX

• Simulator Evaluation

• Conducted in the 747-400 or 747-200

• You will receive paperwork in advance specifying which simulator and giving you a profile and callouts to memorize

Simulator Profile:

• Normal take-off and climb out

• Steep turns

• After maneuvers, you may be asked where you are in relation to the airport and ILS course

• Given a vector onto the ILS

• Shoot the ILS down to minimums, then go missed

• Outboard engine failure during the missed approach (mine was a fire, specifically. I would suggest letting the engine burn until you get to a safe altitude on the missed approach procedure, then shut it down and clean up)

• Run engine failure checklist on the downwind vector back to the ILS

• 3-engine ILS approach to the landing

Personality Inventory

• Standard computer based MMPI test

• "Which do you appreciate more, a well made gun or a poem?"

• Agree or disagree "People don't usually like me and are out to get me."

Group Dynamic

• You will meet with a group of 10-12 other applicants

• The group will be given a problem to work through and a time limit. Two evaluators will move around the room with clipboards observing you progress.

• Problem: You are part of a congressional committee tasked with choosing an astronaut for a particular mission. You will have a mission briefing sheet detailing specific requirements for the mission such as education, skills, physiological requirements, etc. You will also be given the profiles for a number of potential astronauts, then asked to decide as a group which one meets the requirements of the mission

• NOTE: Each mission briefing sheet contains different information. For example, my sheet said an astronaut could only be considered if they had blood type O. Another group member had a sheet that said if the astronaut didn't have blood type O, they could still be considered if they had received immunization X, which included all the potential astronauts. Be careful about following false leads.

Written Test

• Multiple choice aviation knowledge test

• Which clouds are associated with severe turbulence?

• What are the inputs to the EGPWS system?

2 on 1 Interview

• Interview conducted by one Check/Training captain and one HR representative

• Technical and HR questions (see question bank)

Comments

• Very pleasant interview process. Stressful, but pleasant. If you are a U.S. RJ pilot, I can't stress enough the value of a sim session before going across. The training is a little disorganized, and not at all what us North Americans are used to, but they are very supportive, and the process is relatively painless, as long as you meet them half way. Before getting on property, practice that ICAO R.T. as this is one of the big sticking points for those of us coming from a far more relaxed aviation culture. If you hit the ground with your R.T. standard, and you don't spend too much time in Dakota's (the company bar) training really is a breeze.

Great company, great people so far (almost finished first year)

• Everyone I met was very professional and courteous. I've hear a lot of negative things about the interview process with Cathay but I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. I really hope things work out and I go to Hong Kong for phase II.

thanks for your input loopa.

I noticed that your title indicated 'direct entry FO'. Should I assume that Cathay expects the same amount of knowledge for a second officer being interviewed?

Thanks

Correct, but I don't think the theoretical questions will differ that much. I could be wrong.

Fair enough.

A big move isn't easy/possible for everyone. Be sure to do your research. Don't just be blinded by big shiny airplanes. Don't think you ll live in HK for a while then get a YYZ or YVR base. CX hasn't offered bases for four plus years now...

I ve met a lot of great Canadians and Aussies that have made the move. The similarities both country's 'flag' carriers will have to face over the next few years will require a number of people to be nervous. It sure isn't hard to find somone talking about hockey or surfing when you re out for a drink.

It's a job at the end of the day. Make a decision that works in the short term and has great potential in the future. A wiley old captain that I once flew with to a frozen patch of the Canadian wilderness once told me.... ' never turn down a free beer or an interview'

Good luck all.

This is what made the decision hard, as this has always been my thought as well. However I wont pay my own way to Vancouver to attend an interview for a job I wont take. Not going to move to Hong Kong to spend another 4-6 years as a "rampie" (yes you are flight crew but just barely, and the wage is equivalent, for the cost of living, as a northern rampie).

Was offered also and declined, had they been paying my way to Vancouver I would have considered it, but like you said, not going to pay my own way (and my own hotel and meals etc) to interview for a job I'm (likely) not interested in. If they were covering the cost, or if I lived in the Vancouver area, I would have definitely gone and seen if they could pique my interest.

Out of curiosity, what peaked your interest at the time of applying considering you guys both declined when given an interview? Usually you only apply for jobs that you would want. Maybe I'm wrong. lol

Apply to anything you may decide you want later.

Also, never say no to a free trip to Vancouver.

And in reality, changed jobs along the line to one I'm much happier at.

I applied over a year ago, when I was unemployed, to a program that said I'd go to Australia for 30 paid weeks of training and then be flight crew on 747's. After researching the particulars of the deal, its really not a good deal.

Nothing about Cathay is "OK" anymore!
I did both interviews and was offered a course date starting this summer.
Under the current package on offer it is impossible to live in Hong Kong.
But if you are like me and don't believe the 200+ pages of negative stuff on PPRUNE go see for yourself. If you do make it to the second interview it is definately worth the free trip to Hong Kong for you and your wife/husband.
Housing allowance was 60000HKD a month to start, now 10000HKD a month and only goes up to 14000HKD a month when you become a FO. Current upgrade to JFO is 4 years and FO in 5 years if you are lucky.
A half decent 900 Sq Ft place costs between 25000 to 35000 a month.
You WILL NOT be able to support a family.
A basing outside Hong Kong has not been awarded for 4 years so good luck if you think you will ever get back to fly out of your home country.
Holidays/days off are based on seniority so you will NEVER get home during Christmas or Summer Holidays. Staff travel is standby and Cathay usually overbook. Coming home from my interview in Hong Kong my wife and I were not able to get on the same flight.
If you do make it to the second interview in Hong Kong make sure you talk to current pilots at the airport and at Cathay City. I spoke to 5 different guys that all told me not accept under the current package.
Pollution in Hong Kong is terrible!!!!

Second Officer Benefit Package
1) Monthly Salary Package:
Rank Year Salary Hourly Duty Pay blocked to 84 Hours HKPA Total
SO 1 $35,170 $3,517 $10,000 $48,687
2 $40,573 $4,057 $10,000 $54,631
3 $45,443 $4,544 $10,000 $59,987
JFO 1 $55,577 $5,558 $10,000 $71,135
FO 1 $72,270 $7,227 $14,000 $93,496

2) The “Hong Kong Pilot Allowance/Housing Allowance” (HKPA)is applicable to pilots based in Hong Kong according to rank:
Rank Amount per Month
Second Officers & Junior First Officers HK$10,000
First Officers HK$14,000
Senior First Officers HK$18,000
Captain 1 to Senior Captain 2 HK$24,000
Senior Captain 3 to Senior Captain 6 HK$30,000
Senior Captain 7 and above HK$36,000
