Nice indeed, however not their first goaround with a British 4-engine a/c:

Some day they might even get the corrosion out of them and be able to fly them.

You think they just drove it to Great Falls for paint!!!shitdisturber wrote:Some day they might even get the corrosion out of them and be able to fly them.
Re: North Cariboo gets BAE146?
You and I clearly have a different opinion on the jet's performance. I can already see the helmet fire when I have a BE10, followed by a DH8C, followed by a B190, then a D328, then a B146, CRJ1, B737 all trying to go to Ft. Mac at 7 am. My little brain won't be able to 'invent' enough vectors and speed controls to make it work. With the old BAC tapped out at 230 kts in the climb, I could just speed restrict it to follow the props...iflyforpie wrote:Ha, the plane with 5 APUs!
But I always thought they were a cool jet and a really good performer!
Looks really cool in NCB's colours.
Turn right/left heading XXX, vectors for the hell of it.

The a/c shown above is an ex-Air Nova/Jazz 146. Probably sat in the boneyard....ah...used a/c lot....in YYC.
I believe all the 146's are gone from there now. Someone's got 'em.

Yup, its C-GRNT, sat there for a while. Went through a full mtc check a couple years ago prior to being sold to a carrier in Mexico. The deal fell through last minute. Another 146, C-GBAB, ex Air BC is owned by NCA as a parts aircraft.vanishing point wrote:The a/c shown above is an ex-Air Nova/Jazz 146. Probably sat in the boneyard....ah...used a/c lot....in YYC.

Good idea to have one flyable and one to keep it that way.

Only one parts machine ? Sounds risky to me.........vanishing point wrote:Good idea to have one flyable and one to keep it that way.

Yes you could get a CRJ200 for cheap but no gravel and not enough seat in it, '37 200 with gravel kit would work but remember that NCA does a lot of Canadian Norths flying so getting the same plane as them would or could put a sour taste in their mouth which would be bad for their business.
Re: North Cariboo gets BAE146?
Some performance numbers for the 146;
Fuel burn - 4200 lb/hr in cruise at FL 280 and .69 Mach. Yes, its slow.
Climb speed - 250 to 280kts..... Depending on how fast you want to get to altitude. I like 280 kts.
Max performance take-off with 30 flap and 65000lbs TOW - Rotate at 98 kts and airborne in under 2500 feet. Pretty cool.
This is one good performing jet that fills an operational requirement that no modern civilian jet can meet. It can easily operate out of 4000 feet of gravel with 85 pax. If an engine were to fail at V1, it is a non-event. It is also incredibly quiet both inside and out.
Overall, the 146 has proven to be a nice little airplane. The only drawback I can think of is the engines.......they need to be handled gently.
Ciao

I have an uncle in Scotland who years ago was a member of the design team of the then HS146 in Woodford, England in the beginning of the 1970s. Remember him saying that the design was shelved for a time until an appropriate power plant could be found. Along came the Lycomings eventually....perhaps it needed to be on the shelf a bit longer?
He worked on the tail section of the aircraft and was quick to absolve himself from the flap design and its aerodynamic acoustics.

That's strange. Although production of the BAe 146/Avro RJ later switched to Woodford, the 146 was designed in Hatfield.ea306 wrote:I have an uncle in Scotland who years ago was a member of the design team of the then HS146 in Woodford, England in the beginning of the 1970s...

@ Flybabe,
Not sure where you are getting your information from regarding the 146 tanker conversion. Although the project started in 2004 and has been a long time coming, there are actually two operational 146 Airtanker's in the United States...and as of last week they were putting in over 11 cycles per day.
I personally have done the initial testing on this type modification and it works very well in all configurations of speed and flap setting. Not to say that there are not on-going modifications to the STC. Tanker #3 should be ready any day now...and I just ferried another 146 back from the UK for #4 conversion.
You seem to forget that, along with regular maintenance there are a number of checks that need to be done as the retardant is quite corrosive. These checks are done at the Maintenance base in Canada...or maybe you just saw tanker number 3 being tested...unsure.
The 146 is still very popular in Europe...i think North Caribou will have much success with this product.

I used to work for the company that has one of the tankers now in service. The tank system *was* an issue at the time I left there. I am also deeply familiar with the other company that operates the other 146. I am also well aware of the issues of retardant. Keep in mind my first post on this thread is almost a year and a half old. The kinks appear to have been worked out, which I knew they would be - there is a great team of people with a lot of knowledge working with the a/c.
It is great to see that the 146 is now putting in its time as a tanker, and it appears to be a good platform. Keep churning them out, Mach7, they are needed.

Re: North Cariboo gets BAE146?
Just thought I'd let you all know that they are replacing the 146 with two Avro RJ's. Not sure which variant but I'm guessing the RJ85.
Re: North Cariboo gets BAE146?
Saw the crew walk out and the plane taxi afterwards today in YEG, looked great!
