CLEAR PROP!!!

Yesterday, I did my usual yell out before activating battery side of master switch and cranking the engine. One student/pilot just walked by the prop and did not even clue in. I watch around the a/c before cranking and saw him in time to avoid the "minced meat" day.

It's a noisy environment at my home base. There are a constant a/c movements, so I understand that people do not hear the warning. What bothers me is that pilots do not pay attention any more.

Is there a point of barking a "clear prop" anymore? Stay safe everyone, even before getting into your a/c.

If you see someone walk too close to a prop while someone is in the aircraft, walk (or run) to that person and take a moment to educate them. If you don't do it right then, nobody will ever do it.

Did you have the window open? Makes a difference..
Basically any time you walk in front of a plane with a pilot in it you should make eye contact or give it a wide berth.... like crossing a street in Italy

I yell it every time with the window open. The rear engine on the Skymaster always gets me paranoid, especially since that aircraft always attracts attention when it is out and we have no security fencing.

You can't prevent people from being idiots unfortunately. All you can do is try to reduce risk as much as possible by educating individuals about the hazards of aircraft, posting signs, walking around your aircraft and making sure everyone is well away and/or visible, turning the beacon on, yelling clear, and waiting before engaging the starter.

Ramp safety: I teach that if you can see someone in an
aircraft, or the beacon is on, you have to expect the prop
to turn.

Also, I teach that the most dangerous thing is more than
one prop turning on the ramp at the same time. Often
you can't see it, or hear it.

Always safest to pass behind an aircraft, not in front of it.
