Maybe if they called it YYC then it could be said that YYC could finally land more than 2 a/c an hour

How about Wop May. If that does not find favour perhaps authorities could name an airport in Italy after him.

Re: Renaming Edmonton Internatioal Airport
Actually there already is a May field named after him in Edmonton but its a road not an airport oddly enough. And the airport he made famous is named after a mayor of the city. And the road is nowhere even near the airport eitherMoose47 wrote:How about Wop May. If that does not find favour perhaps authorities could name an airport in Italy after him.

I could be wrong but I thought Mayfield got its name because Wop May used to have a grass strip in the area.azimuthaviation wrote:Actually there already is a May field named after him in Edmonton but its a road not an airport oddly enough. Post it in a new thread, most know very little about "Cowboy" Blatchford.
Another great Edmontonian and Albertan aviator that is getting lost in our history.

As others have noted WOP May has Mayfield named in his honour, plus there are plans to name the main square of the development planned for ECCA after him.Moose47 wrote:How about Wop May. If that does not find favour perhaps authorities could name an airport in Italy after him.

While I agree with the bulk of the sentiments on here with regards to how aviation has been treated I had thought that it was more important to recognize a great aviator than anything else.
Yes I'm pissed at what has happened with ECCA and the general shit kicking aviation is taking in the region, but this seems like an opportunity to push an aviation icon back into the public front and hopefully start making things change for the better.

Re: Renaming Edmonton Internatioal Airport
There has been much venting on this thread about ERAA and the City's decision to close ECCA.
(and yes I am pissed about it too)
While I know of nothing that can be done to stop the ECCA closure there is lots that can be done to do something about what is happening to aviation in Greater Edmonton/Northern region.
To do something useful about it I have created this thread on Villeneuve.

If you are looking for a place to vent this should be it that way it creates a central spot that can be referenced to show the damage that has been done and what needs to change to make a difference.
The thread created lets you post under your non de plume/alias or use your name if you wish (I can understand using our alias so there is no retaliation or negative effect on business or career).
I believe we still need to recognize Max Ward in a big way and in spite of who runs it now the International Airport makes sense to me as that is where Max Ward made Ward Air work.
But if nothing else use the other thread to vent, at least that can be used to push for change and record how to make change.

Re: Renaming Edmonton Internatioal Airport
Now that all the witty asides are over, I think it would be more appropriate to name Yellowknife Max Ward airport, since his start was there. Having said that, Canadian North is working out of Wardair's YEG hangar, so you have a valid point.
I simply believe that the Edmonton Airport Authority has an agenda which is not friendly to General Aviation, WestJet or the Northern Airlines. I still think that if they are gonna change it, Gateway to nowhere or The Home of Gate 49 would be more appropriate.

Poverty plan gates, mid sixties terminal section. As user friendly as the Jazz Ghetto in Calgary.

Re: Renaming Edmonton Internatioal Airport
All the new gate and concourse construction is happening on the far side of the US Customs. For the most part that means Air Canada and various US airlines get the new gates. I don't know where WJ parks for US destinations, presumably they're passengers would need to clear US customs here as well. WJ, Canada North, etc check in counters are all at the north end of the terminal which is the original building from the sixties.
