N557H Gulfstream G550 breaks free from tug - hits King Air

Post by bizjets101 »

Ground handling tug was towing H.J. Heinz Gulfstream GV-SP (550), when the tow bar and tug became separated,
GV collided with a King Air C90A lifting it's tail off the ground, leaving it resting on the Gulfstream's nose.

Occurred today just before 15:00 at Nashville Intl. Airport KBNA.

Well, I remember Kaiser Resources (Edgar Kaiser's) brand spanking new Gulfstream III C-GKRL plane was just weeks old back in 1980 - a ramp jockey at YVR Innotech Aviation was towing it on a wet ramp, with the airstairs down - they sit about an inch off the ground with the wire on - so you can move the aircraft.

A little too much speed, mixed with a wet ramp, and nobody in the cockpit - I think the plane was 3 weeks new - the tug jack knifed and hit the airstairs. That little bill cost us over 1 million dollars - that was in 1980.

But then of course we'd just spent another million buying a new set of wings for C-FSEN Ford of Canada's Hawker - when we sucked the wings inside out - attempting to defuel the aircraft for xrays and weigh in!!, but left the fuel vents covered.

So, a 2009 build G550 with a current hull value I'd say 42 million USD - heck I wouldn't even want to guess the bill.

I used to manage five Citation jets in Orange County California - it wasn't uncommon to throw 15 grand just for parts on MY credit card!!, then have to get the owners to cough up the money . . . fortunately we never dinged one.

The ketchup comment, was in reference to when H.J. Heinz painted their two Jetstar's N257H and N357H the actual colour of their famous product, Heinz 57 ketchup. N557H is Heinz's new Gulfstream.
