It's a club rule, not CARS. Why don't you petition the club to remove the rule? I would be interested to find out what prompted the rule in the first place. Maybe it was a requirement from an insurance company policy a long time ago and isn't actually needed anymore.

No kidding. If that was a rule at my club I'd have a motion in at the next meeting for the CFI to be replaced ASAP. And the club president would probably be thrown out for good measure.

Not sure anyone cares, but from a practical standpoint,
what I tell people is that it's ok above 1,000 feet, but
below 1,000 feet only the PIC touches the controls,
and shut up so you don't distract him (the low-time PIC).

I know several aircraft that have been wrecked with
the owner in the right seat - whom was NOT an instructor -
and their buddy trying to teach himself to land in the left seat.

Don't do that. See first paragraph.

Some of my pax have as much stick time as some of our posters. Especially in the Caravan! You don't think I want to spend hours on end steering the thing do you? They usually end up driving the thing most of the way to the destination. I have books to read.

I wonder how many pilots out there don't let their passengers fly the plane, but yak away with them the entire flight? I've never flown an aircraft that didn't need a sterile cockpit rule for at least 10 minutes at each end.

What would happen if I let the passenger sit in the left seat. Is there a regulation stating that I must sit on the left seat on a 172 if acting as PIC?

Are you kidding?! No. Heck, you can sit in the
back seat and log PIC if you want to. I know airline
pilots that do that all the time.

The only place you might find this sort of certified
type-specific restriction is in the AFM (or via placards).

I figured that it might not be 100% safe to fly in the right seat PIC if you haven't done it before. But I'm thinking of getting an instructor to take me up for a few hours in the right seat because I think it would be a hoot to let some friends take the left seat while I'm flying to give them a feel of what means to sit at the controls.

I figured since the 172 has dual controls you can PIC from the right seat, I don't know if you can rent a plane nor if insurance would be happy with that though.

Of course not - but what on earth does that have to
do with regulations?

Do you honestly think that merely complying with
regulations will keep you safe?

The flying club you are renting from might not like that all that much. At what point does 'giving a feel' end and 'giving instruction' begin?

Some of you are too daft to get it, aren't you? Do you wipe your ass with your right hand? Or left? Which is correct? There just MUST be a CARS that covers this, because Christ knows, you're too bloody stupid to figure it out on your own! Is it Okay if somebody else wipes my ass for me? Or would the CARS consider this dual instruction on ass wiping? If I don't wipe my own ass, an I still considered PIC? Give your collective heads a shake. You're flying along in your 172 Thunder Streak, and your passenger wants to try steering the thing......Big Frikken Deal!.....so LET him/her. This is NOT rocket science here children. It's bloody common sense! NO you shouldn't let them try to land......although I did allow a PPL, Doctor friend of mine attempt a take off from the right seat of the DAK....that was interesting and very entertaining. I guess, a lot depends on YOUR comfort level? But if you're NOT comfortable with letting your buddy steer the 172 around a bit....go flip burgers.

On the contrary, I want to let my passengers try to controls to the point I want them to feel what it's like sitting in the drivers seat. However I don't know what the legalities involved with this. Whether the flight school would allow this, or the insurance company would give you hassles over this, or someone would mistake this as flight training.

This, my limit is 2000 ft but then CS has a few more hours than me :)

The look on a 3 year olds face when he/she pulls back on the stick and the plane goes up is one of the good things in life.

What I find funny is the number of teenagers who will not take the controls when offered. Yet between 6 and 10 years old,
100% take the yoke.

Well, if you're really stupid enough to TELL the school, the insurance company and Transport Canada......
"Hey guys! Guess what? I let my passengers FLY!"
"Hey officer! Guess what? I was SPEEDING!"

Do you people (not aimed at you g_goo_goo, non of this is) really need US to make your decisions FOR you? Do you all lack any semblance of COMMON SENSE??

Is this industry really that phuqued up, that this thread is even in existance? Your collective stupidity hurts my head!

Just one thing, Doc. There are many countries where they only use their left hand to wipe their asses, and only their right hands to eat. The left hand is considered unclean, and even if you are left-handed, if you make a gesture, even a friendly one, with your left hand, it is a very grave insult. Sometimes even to the extent that if you were, say, to stroke your chin with your right hand, it would indicate that you have respect for the wisdom of the words you are hearing. If you do the same thing with your left hand, you are mocking the person, just as an example of the kind of trouble you can get yourself into without even realizing it.

Since there are many Canadian pilots working in countries like this, it might actually be something a Captain might need to know, in order to prevent his silly young co-pilot from getting them both stoned or beheaded just by trying to be friendly.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, and much more important to know than the original post subject.

I've found the biggest problem is getting a 4-year old to give them up! Little buggers are strong too!
Also explaining to not kick the fuel selector, next time he's not getting his car-seat.

Interesting points and opinions on this thread.
Not to hijack it but I have to ask, Doc what is your problem ?
You have got to be the most bitter immature and unhappy person I have ever encountered on this forum.
I really hope you are not in a teaching position or a position of authority.
Maybe you should go back over your postings and re read some of the insulting and abusive crap you posted.
Just brutal, the moderators should just kick your ass out of here

Are you an instructor? If not, you've just admitted to giving flight instruction to your wife. Perhaps instead of pissing on me, perhaps you should make sure your own backyard is clean?? I don't appreciate your attack. You know nothing about me. Again, please put me on your "ignore" list. I don't expect to have to bring this up again.

That's why it was a PM, but if you're stupid enough to make it public, I stand by my comment. BTW, giving flight instruction without an flight instructor rating is in direct contravention of CARS.
