I have put out resumes for the Ramp route because of reading and understanding that unless you have a tremendous amount of luck or know someone, it is one of the only routes into a flying position.
Knowing someone yes, but you can create your own luck! Sending resumes blindly and waiting for a call back will never get you a job, especially an entry level job, and double especially an entry level flying job, there are just way too many eager young people that go above and beyond in a positive way to get noticed, essentially creating their own "luck". If You want to be lazy about it and just wait for the call, then you WILL be flipping burgers! :)

It seems that you have been more busy than me...I've made the road trip in the whole ontario/manitoba, every company that hold a 702/703 AOC have my résumé in their system...I have diploma in Industrial Engineering, International trade, and I'm doing a MBA...I have experiences in international trade, management, purchasing, construction, planning/scheduling, quality system management and...pit bitch...just don't ask what is it! :lol: ...

and I got 0 phone calls/interview/email...but I am sending/giving my résumé to chief pilot/op manager and, as a licenced commercial pilot, I ask for a pilot job...ok maybe I should stop wearing that shirt with four bars and kicking the CP's door while I asked him to fuel and load that crappy navajo :lol: !

but I strongly believe in this way to start...I got more call/email and offer from the industry where I came from...and I never sent any résumé in this industry since I left !

Well Doc, care to elaborate on your knowledge of these careers rather then launching a one liner?

Also, CDNpilot, im doing follow up calls with many places I apply to but I often get stymied by HR when I ask for the contact numbers of the person in-charge of recruiting. Would it be appropriate to contact the chief pilot directly or would they just be bothered that they were contacted?

Two years of med school, mate. Hence the handle. And no, Doctors do not have to spend two years washing the bosses cars or sweeping the parking lot. Most couldn't start a fork lift. Obviously they don't do open heart surgery right out of school! DOH!
My wife's been a teacher for a several years. Their "practicum" is part of their education in teacher's college. They are NOT qualified teachers at this time. They are still in school. When they graduate with a degree in education, they can go directly into a class full of kids. I know of no teachers (and I know a shit load of them) who can drive a fork lift, or have ever been asked to spend two years washing the principal's cars!
Most of my passengers just happen to be lawyers. Really. We fly the court system around the north. The lawyers who are articling are doing so in direct touch with their future careers as lawyers. Again, no washing of cars or sweeping of parking lots.
Perhaps you should do YOUR homework. Let me guess. You got C's in school?
Go flip burgers.

Sounds like it's too late for the poster, but like it or not, most of us had to work the ramp to get into an aeroplane. Best advice I ever got was to get a ramp job before finishing training. By the time I had my multi IFR I had already put in my time, and it was not wasted. By the time I was in the right seat of a twin otter, flying it was the only thing I had to learn. The other 75% I picked up on the ramp.

Just to made it clear, I don't have any problem doing the job on the ramp, with the guys doing the rampie job or even a pilot who finally decide that his path it's doing the rampie job. And in some case, like bush or cargo, it may be a part of the training working few times on the ramp.

I don't like, the fact that a large number of newly licensed commercial pilot MUST work on the ramp to get the entry level pilot job and some operators abuse of those overskilled cheap rampie/pilot. And this general trend seems to be the norm in canadian aviation equally shared with doing instruction at 220H! The stick and dangling carrot management theory is outdated since the mid 90's...

Seems that most pilots tend to think whatever approach they've taken to their career in aviation tends to result in the most qualified people, might be a self-serving bias, but maybe we simply find it easier to relate to pilots that have had similar career paths? Ultimately the most success way to enter the industry is the one which allows a pilot to achieve their long-term career objectives, or changes their goals all together.

I certainly wouldn't encourage anyone to exclusively look for a ramp position to enter the industry because they feel the 'credibility' they earn is going to help them throughout their career. That said, in general, transitioning from working the ramp or working in the 'office' to the flight line is certainly easier than showing up straight from flight school. The rampie will likely be a familiar face to whomever is conducting the training, and they'll be familiar with company operations making the transition from training to line-flying much easier.

The poll ended thanks for your times, I'm surprised that nobody hit the pilot shortage options :wink:

The real question behind this, is more "how a low timer can get visibility and present his résumé on the busiest aviation forum..?!"

There is the "Hire me" section, where nobody goes...

You have this way ;
RudderWhat wrote: I have 236TT, 42.1 multi.
If I get a PA31 type rating, would I be more competitive?
The smart way :roll: :
klund wrote: For now i'm crossing my fingers and just waiting for the call as my ability to up and relocate is very flexible. (If anyone has a lead feel free to PM me :prayer: )
Or my way :twisted: ;
-start a new topic on a controversy subject,like the college of pilot, buying a type rating or working the ramp...but you need somethings new to bring, like a poll...
-slowly introduce yourself and show that you can write 2 consecutives complete sentences...
-let the discussion goes and when the RAC quote appears, make somethings to show your sens of humor and keep the interest...
-advertise your education, résumé, etc. here and there
-and create a big final like this video below..there nothing like a blond woman to promote whatever product... :mrgreen:

http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/13656286/lake-red

I'm leaving for a road trip in a week, across canada, from south-east to north-west, and I'll settle down for a while wherever I found a job ! If you guys have a contact or something that can lead me to my first pilot job, pm's me or if you have time for a beer let me know :wink:

feel free to post your reply :wink: I hope you guys have a good sens of humor and you enjoyed the work ! :mrgreen:
