Rules regarding medication

Post by wanderer_ »

Hi guys

I merely have a few hours of fight training and haven't flown in a long time.

Could someone enlighten me as to the rules regarding medications ?

From what I understand:

1. If the medication is on the approved list, you can take the medication and go flying ?

2. If the medication is not on the approved list:
a. Could you take the medication but fly only after it's all out of your system ? OR
b. You can't take any medications that are not approved if you hold an aviation medical (even if you don't fly while the medication is in your system ?

Which one sounds right ?

Next, where can I find this list of approved medications ?
Is it online or you just have to call the transport canada civil aviation doctors to check ?

Thanks for any help, it's greatly appreciated.

The "list" is not exhaustive. There are medications you can take that are not on the list depending on what you are being treated for. While CAME's differ from each other, it is probably best to discuss the situation with your doctor and with a Civil Aviation Medicial Examiner so they can assess your specific situation. It worked for me and I now have a Cat I medical working towards my commercial.

Keep in mind that my link is applicable to the United States, NOT Canada. It *might* serve as a guideline, but the best thing is to definitely speak with your CAME or TC.
