Plane crash in Temagami - Labor Day Weekend 2012

Hi there, this past weekend I was involved in a serious plane crash in Temagami, Ontario. My wife, the pilot/owner and I escaped unharmed. I believe the plane was 182 Cessna although I can't verify that. The engine shutoff mid flight and we descended into the forest while trying to make a nearby lake. It was a terrifying ordeal, not something anyone should go through. I just wanted to find out what the procedure is after a plane crash? No one has contacted us regarding the crash, maybe it is still a bit early? Thanks, I've attached some photos I took shortly after we exited the wreckage.

Wow! You are such a lucky guys!

But WHY do you think your pilot hasn't reported it yet? You said, nobody was hurt. That means, the pilot/owner was capable to report this accident immediately. If he doesn't know how to do that, his proficiency and currency turns into an issue to discuss with Transport Canada.

There's nothing in the CADORS yet. It's a 185, not a 182, but that's not terribly important. Report it as Gogona suggested, you can get more info on the aircraft and it's owners here if you need it. Just type in the registration (c-fwds) in the "mark" field:

Are you sure the pilot didn't report it? How did you get out of the bush after the crash? Was this a commercial or private flight? (I could look up don't have the time, and surely BizJets will be all over the info)
Needless to say you are lucky you guys escaped unharmed...

Thank you for the comments, I will check with the owner. I'm sure he did if that was protocol, but he did not tell us. We were just going for a scenic trip, it was our first ever flight in a small plane.

After we crashed, we were picked up by the owner of a charter company in Temagami, who flies a Beaver aircraft (cant recall the name). We were picked up on Kokoko lake, just north of Temagami.

Narrative: The privately-registered, float-equipped Cessna A-185F aircraft was on a VFR flight from [origin and destination not reported]. NAV CANADA staff at Toronto ACC were advised by J.R.C.C. Trenton staff that the aircraft had crashed short of Kokoko Lake (47º05'38"N 080º01'93"W) due to an engine failure. There were three (3) S.O.B. with no reported injuries. T.S.B. and CACO staff advised.

The pilot did something right! Too bad about the plane, but great news that all walked away. Id say well done to the pilot (at least until we find out why his engine failed)?. Either way though, good job keeping everyone alive in an obviously ugly option for a landing area.

Thanks for the comments again. We feel bad the plane is a writeoff. But then we also feel so lucky to have got through this. The pilot definitely made the right decisions once we were in trouble. I think it was a great bit of quick thinking under extreme circumstances, combined with some luck when we dropped into the forest.

shoinen, I'm curious, did you pay for this scenic trip? You mentioned the pilot/owner, but not your buddy or old friend which leads me to think that this was a chisel charter. I would suspect if this is the case he is probably trying to keep you as far away from the investigation as possible.

When he flies (not my dog) I watch, seems to be a good pilot but takes chances. With two accidents, might not fly again due to increased insurance rates.

Hi there... thank you for the post but I just want to state that the practise you are suggesting was definitely not the case. Earlier that weekend, we'd checked rates with commercial charter services in the area and, on that day, we'd decided we were comfortable with the risks we were assuming on a private flight over the area. I dont know the industry very well, but I can guess that for a registered charter service there are insurances covered that are built into the fee. For this reason we would vindicate that people understand these risks. Lastly, I must thank with ours lives the local pilots in the area, two of which came to our calls for help (Lakeland Charters - Darryl). To me, this was more important that surviving the whole ordeal, the fact that people dropped everything to assist in this very desparate situation is very inspiring.

I must also add that the pilot saved our lives by the decisions he took in those critical moments... This cannot be doubted, we are alive today because of this.

Actually the boat hit him, an old guy whom had been drinking, hiding behind the windshield of his boat to avoid the weather, said he didn't see the plane, was in a hurry to pick up grandkids at the dock.
I have flown with this pilot many times, probably the most cautious I have flown with, I have never seen him take any "chances". I don't understand where that misinformation came from.
