Who has been to Hong Kong?
Need help going through HKG as a pax...I am going to HKG on Nov 1 and get there at 16:20. I have to transfer to Philippine Airlines to go on to Manila, and I am trying to find out how long it will take me to get from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2. I hope to jumpseat it to Hong Kong, then I have to get a paid ticket to Davao (thru Manila).
Also, can you do this without passing through Hong Kong immigration? If not, how long will that take?
I would like to get on a PR flight leaving HKG for MNL at 18:05, and am trying to figure if I have enough time, or will it be cutting it too fine?
Any other tricks & traps about connecting in HKG also? And if I have to stay there till 22:05, what to do or where to go for 6 hours?
Thanks.

Re: Who has been to Hong Kong?
Hi, I've been to HK a few times. T2 is very close to T1 (from the exit point at immigrations its 5 minutes to walk.) From T2 you actually can grab a train and actually head back to where you came from (T1) and away to your gate. I would honestly advise not to grab such a close connection if it's not a flexible fare. On long flights (very long if you're leaving from Toronto) a strong headwind could increase the flying time drastically! If it's flexible - try for it, worse that can happen is you miss the later flight (unable to transfer on to it due to loads) and try again the following day.
When you arrive there are transfer desks but I've never used them so I am not one to talk about what you can get away with by using them.
Hope you have a good trip!
Edit to add: For 6 hours you could grab the train into town. It stops off in Kowloon and Hong Kong (very good connections to subways from there). It's $100 or so one way if I recall correctly. See a few of the sights if you have never been and jump back on the train back to the airport. Its about 20 minutes each way.

Re: Who has been to Hong Kong?
T2 and T1 are actually the same terminal. T2 is only a check-in processing facility. Your gate should be very close.
There should be a transfer desk; and yes, you can bypass Hong Kong Immigration controls entirely.
AC is very full out of HKG all the time. I actually would not want to be a jumpseater in HKG. Good luck nonetheless.

Re: Who has been to Hong Kong?
On other thing regarding the full flights. Yes most times the flights are fairly full. However the no-show % is extremely high. A few reasons. Some business types buy tickets on CX or AC on all the flights and when they show up at the airport they get on the soonest flight to depart. Once in Canada they redeem the other tickets because they bought full refundable tickets. Another problem is people getting money in the Country. They will buy tickets on CX or AC and redeem them after the flight has arrived in Canada. They don't need to tell the Canadian Customs officials they have more than $10,000 and they get the money out when the arrive. I believe AC (not sure about CX) is trying to do something about this... I have been on a flight that was 80 oversold and got on with empty seats to boot!
Re: Who has been to Hong Kong?
I suggest the Thai airlines lounge at HK if you can get in.
The food is excellent .
Not sure its feasable to leave and come back with six hours.
Its a fair treck into hk from the airport and frankly im usually so zonked after a 17 hr flight i just want to shower shave and nap.
Also the flight may be late getting in so 6 hours may be 4.5 etc.
In general things are very effecient.
Ie its way better than LHR or ORD.
Oh ive not seen AC 16 and 15 other than nearly full but tuesday-thursday is a bit quieter.

Re: Who has been to Hong Kong?
Many thanks to all of you, and the valuable info. Sincerely appreciated. Various places describe this airport (terminal) as the 3rd-largest in the world behind DXB and PEK. And I thought LAX, LHR, and ATL were "big"....
This is why I was intimidated about the problems of getting around there. However, I think the cautions about AC being full (or almost) out of HKG for YVR are enough to give me tremors of having to find accommodation there for a few nights, as I understand it's not "cheap"...and I sure appreciate that heads-up, as I would have been jumping it back across the Pacific with AC.
So I have decided to go with PR all the way to Davao.
thanks again.
