Saturday off in YVR

Going to YVR to visit family for Thanksgiving, just was told that I'm exempt from going to YYJ on Saturday to visit the Mother In Law - I'm free to hang out and do what I want in YVR. So, what better to do than go flying!

So, looking for the best place to get a hour or so dual combined with a City Tour (no point getting checked out then renting solo, might as well combine the two and learn something into the bagain).

Any suggestions? I've flown 172 and 152s, might be an opportunity to try something different - but then might have a couple of passengers with me....

ps, as of now, not renting a car....

There are no flying schools at YVR - nearest are at Boundary Bay CZBB. Assuming you can get to ZBB from YVR there are several schools that fly 152s/172s. If you want to try something different Sealand Air has Diamond DA20's, DA40 & DA42

It's easy to get to ZBB from YVR via transit. About 45 minutes.

Spend the afternoon in the Alibi Room - save you some money.

If its a scenic flight you want take the skytrain downtown, go find Harbour Air by the Convention Center and take a scenic flight in a Beaver. You won't be able to log it but guaranteed you'll learn something especially if you haven't been on floats before. Your friends will love it.

Helijet offers scenic flights from downtown as well. Starting at $99 I believe.

Tofino Air offers tours out of the harbour as well. At present I dont think there are any dual control beavs at either establishment.

I think you know my opinion. Find the plane and instructor that will let you fly "dual". Those scenic flights look like getting to ride in a nascar. Almost as good as getting to drive.

Why not combine the best of both worlds, spend the afternoon at The Alibi room and then head down to Harbour Air for a glacier tour, if the weather cooperates you may even have an opportunity to land at an alpine lake and enjoy spectacular views of the Tantalus mountain range.

This would be my idea of a day off
Call Harbour Air and they will come and get you from YVR main terminal and take you to the float base on the south side of YVR.
go in to their terminal and have a few at the Flying Beaver Pub, if you are hungary, the Red Neck Pizza is good...., well so is everything.
Then hop the float plane to Victoria harbour.
Lots to do and see there. Several good brew pubs as well.
When you are done, hop the float plane back to the south terminal and the shuttle back to YVR main terminal.

I don't want to ruin this "go to the alibi room." suggestion but... is it the sort of place his kids will enjoy or will they have to sit on the curb out front? Remember he doesn't have a car there.

Skytrain to bridgeport - 620 south delta to ladner - c76 right to boundary bay. go check out sealandair, youll have a blast flying the diamonds around, maybe even skip the city tour and head to chiliwack for pie.. or also at czbb (i think pro but correct me if im wrong) you can get some dual in a citabria. either of which would be more fun then a city tour with 2 other tourist families squeezed into a beaver

I took the vancouver transit recommended buses from downtown to Langly once. They closed the museum when I arrived. So I can't recomend that. http://www.canadianflight.org/

Maybe I'm projecting. If I managed to dodge the mom inlaw on the saturday I'd probably end up with one or both kids. When he said, "passengers" I read it as the off spring, but not the band. They might play music by those guys at the Alibi room.

Thanks for the advice! Ended up doing the transit/CZBB/dual thing on Sat at Canadian Flight Center (was trying to get an aerobatic intro but that didn't work out) - perfect weather. Strange to fly near mountains for an Ontarian! Kids - the young ones stayed home, was visiting grown up kids in Vancouver who both work in the food and beverage industry so plenty of other entertainment over the 4 days we were there, including a pole dancer accomapnied by a classical violinist on a street corner....

I'm hoping there was some pictures taken while you were flying.

I understand if there was not though. I'm more interested in flying the 172 than taking pictures of them myself. However if you did take some I want to see them. I don't even mind if they're giant on here.
