It's probibaly either a fake or a movie stunt of some sort. Looks like an early Cessna 182. But who can guess what that roundish lump is on the turtledeck just behind the cabin. Cat Driver - your disqualified.
The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

It is easily a fake. There are no propeller marks on the cab of the truck, the oil inspection door is open, and the size of the airplane is disproportionate to the size of the truck. Not to mention the amount of damage to the truck vs the plane.
And yeah the lump is a DF loop.

I'm sure I'm gonna take a good flaming on this one. That pic is indeed real. From my understanding it was taken while the plane was landing. Either for some national geographic vid, or cessna promotion I can't remember which. The picture is a frame from the actual video. I'll do some google searching and see if I can find more on it. Anyone ever see the video of the beaver cartwheeling? I imagine a still from that video would look pretty fake too.
alright found it. here's the pastings of what I found. Don't suppose anyone actually has one of the issues this picture would have been in?

This picture was taken in Sanarate, Guatemala in 1976 by Robert W. Madden.
It was posted in the National Geographic. I have the NG picture book (Hebrew version). It's the book with the picture of the Afghan girl with the amazing eyes on the cover. The picture is printed on page 50 of this book. I'll try to translate from Hebrew:

A plane that was on a rescue mission after an earth quake encounters cross wind on landing and crashes. Only moments before the crash Robert W. Madden landed on the same dirt road and he took the picture from his airplane window.

I sent a copy of the photo to an FAQ at National Geographic.
Here is the response:
Dear (Braindead)
Thank you for contacting the National Geographic Society.
The photo you sent us actually was first published in a June 1976 National
Geographic article on Guatemala. NGS Photographer Robert Madden took the
shot of a rescue plane that crashed into a truck while trying to land on a
mountain highway near Sanarate. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured
in the crash. This photo was also published on page 51 of our 1994 book
National Geographic: The Photographs.
I hope this information proves helpful.
Sincerely,
Lisa Walker

anyone still in doubt can check national geographics website, I found the pic on there too. You can be sure if national geographic is posting the picture it is authentic.
