How long to make 50k-60k as a pilot ?

How long did it take you in the industry to make 50k and 60k (respectively) annually ?

If you get there in 3 years you have done well. It all depends on how many times you switch operators, if you work seasonally and what kind of employers you choose.

This will be my 4th year operating commercially, 2nd in a 703 operation. Ive just cleared the 50K hurdle, as a Capt, working on a light turbine.

First job was right seat King air 200 making 32. After 8 months in the right seat I was left seat navajo making north of 50.

I did my whole career in Quebec though.

3rd year in the industry I broke 50 K in a PA31-350(16 yrs ago)...The following year I spent on floats on the coast and made over 60K. I only flew 8 months that year as well.

18 months of dispatching and instructing. making close to 60k as a class 2 instructor. now im in the right seat of a king air for going on 3 years and have been around 40k since.

I worked for 1 year as an instructor made 35k, then 2years 206/185/BE200 f/o 42k, then 2 years leftseat navajo/capt Be200 55k first year and left make 67k. Now airline making 73k and only going up...

The problem, is when do you make what you are worth? Making 60k, for about the last 6 years. However, I need more to pay for a 250k mortgage, and kids, save for education, and retirement

took about five years to crack $60, one more year to go back under it, another four years above it, another two years under it.... you get the picture. choices that make sense for your life and long term career aspirations won't necessarily correspond to a linearly growing paycheque over the course of your career.

Easiest way to make 60 grand in aviation is to start with 6 million...

It's been said on here before but the more important question is how long until you make 80k. 80 is the new 50. Especially out west where the cost of living is higher it's hard - if not impossible - to get ahead on 50 to 60k if you have any amount of debt to pay off. Even experienced float pilots out here are feeling the squeeze. My advice; find yourself a girlfriend who is a nurse.

Went from 36K to 55K between the third & fourth year. 65K in fifth, improvements from there. Lived in five cities by year eight.

That isn't the question you should be asking to be honest. Plenty of guys make 50K plus after a few years, but then not too long after find themselves back under the 40K mark after taking a "promotion" to a new job on supposedly better equipment. The question should be how many years before you ended up in a career job making 60K + a year where you weren't looking for your next job 6 months after you got hired. And the follow up to that..How many years in your career job before you had enough seniority to stop worrying about getting laid off on the first down turn.

50-60K always depends where you live.... I live eastern YQB City. Mortgage is not the same can tell you that if I compare my 2 story 31X37/by the river house to some other places I just simply couldn't afford.

Everything here is pretty sheap compared to some other provinces I had the chance to be except for the fuel was 1.48 that just came down to 1.33/liter. For example a almost brand new 2 bedroom apt. is not more than 800 a month.

So it's not a problem for me making lower than 70K for the most exciting kind of flying, and still can afford toys for boys of all kinds... Pretty low paiment without loaded credit card. Wouldn't fly out of YYZ for 65K Transat for example.

Wouldn't turn-off that job for a 150K job in YYZ. In my opinion the salary in terms of $$$$$$K depends on where you live.

Other than that I'm underpaid for what I do. Pilots salaries should be ruled by type,weight, kind of ops etc... throughout the country.

I made more than 50 from day 1 and I make around 100K now. Been flying for the a living for 6 years.
