See thats where its wrong, if you are gonna charge $45/hr for instructor it should all go to the instructor. Let the operator make his money off of the airplane and fuel.

Years ago where I instructed, I started as a class four making 12$/hour. I was charged out at 45$/hour. As I gained experience instructing, and as I taught other endorsements and ratings, what the school charged increased, but my wage did not. Where I made money was freelancing. If I ever needed school facilities, I made sure they made their money, but when it was soley my time and other equipment - that was mine.

It depends upon the particular school, it's location, and the class and experience of instructor.

If the school charges say $38/hr (which is pretty common) a class 4 might get $12. A class 3 might get $15. Class 2 and 1 instructors tend to be better paid because they are legally required as supervisory and CFI. A class 2 might get $20, a class 1 might get $25. Every school is different.

Don't accept a class 4 as your instructor. Insist on at least a class 2. You're paying the same, why shouldn't you get more for your money? You are the customer, after all, don't take any crap from the school.

$12-$20/hr Lucky if they make $15,000/yr. I've heard of some making barely $11,000 as full-time instructors. Its ridiculous! Funny thing is go and ask someone not in the aviation industry how much they think instructors to start make you'll get $28,000 and up.

Actually I'm a class 4. I'm still very driven and my spirit hasn't be crushed by the industry. My students are my # 1 priority and my aviation backround is fairly diverse with about 14 different A/C under my belt so far. My PPL was done by a class 2 and I can honestly say I'm a far better teacher :/

I don't think you need a PPC for that. but just to make sure, double check with Transport Canada... They will give you the right answer.

A Class 4 can sometimes be the best instructor in the school. I am an instructor, obviously by the name, and I know, almost all instructors, whether a class 1, 2, 3, or 4, all have very little experience flying. A Class 4 however sometimes can have more motivation, new ways to approach things, and far less disgruntled as some of the class 1s and 2s.

Especially nowasdays, there are many Class 1s and 2s that never intended to be in instructying this long, or to ever become a class 1 or 2. They can be bitter, distracted, or don't get me wrong, they may be great instructors. I'm just trying to say it really depends on the type of person it is. It's not about what class they are, it's about if they are the kind of person that can TEACH. It also depends on the type of training you're doing. If it's advanced training, go with an experienced instructor, or a freelance instructor.

While most are paid low wages, there are a few exceptions. As a III (almost II), $30+ per hour is pretty darn good where I'm at. (And might I add that I'm not a freelance instructor).

I'm the only instructor on staff, but still. I can earn a somewhat decent living. There are a few good companies out there. One just has to go out and find them.
